Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Researcher III for the School of Pharmacy. The Laboratory Researcher III will conduct professional-level experiments and research, while assisting and coordinating the activities of basic research and histology lab members. The Laboratory Researcher III will perform professional-level experiments and research using various techniques, carry out routine and non-routine work with occasional review of work outputs by supervisors, and will document work performed via databases, lab notebooks, and other platforms.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Collects/sorts/processes/inventories samples, performs analysis, and presents results to students, peers, and supervisory management.
  • Inventories laboratory supplies and consumables.
  • Prepares weekly ordering lists and tracks received items.
  • Utilizes and maintains highly specialized equipment while keeping the workplace and laboratory organized, clean, and safe in accordance with established procedures.
  • Trains and leads students and technicians through various laboratory-related activities.
  • Performs other tasks including animal care, observation, experimentation, surgery, euthanasia, necropsy, and histology techniques, including fixation, wet trimming, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and mounting slides.
  • Makes decisions and choices following standard practices and procedures, the scientific method (observation, hypothesis, experimentation, inductive and deductive reasoning, and analysis), and effective scientific communication.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and a minimum of two years research experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in building and leading collaborative scientific teams and facilitating collaborative research.
  • Leadership experience with significant responsibility in the context of research & development programs.
  • Excellent written and oral skills.
  • Experience in preparing SOPs, training documents, and reports.
  • Specialized training, including the development, design, and execution of animal studies and precise laboratory record maintenance is integral to successful collaborations with faculty, students, and other researchers.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Visual acuity and the ability to distinguish fine gradation of colors, manual dexterity in both hands, above-average eye-hand coordination.
  • Ability to grasp and manipulate small instruments and delicate equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD in biological sciences.
  • At least 7 years of experience as a basic research laboratory manager.
  • 10 years of experience in vivo laboratory animal study design and execution (preferably in fields of toxicology, pharmacology, and/or pathology).
  • In vivo exposure models (pregnancy rodent models).
  • Intratracheal instillation or inhalation.
  • Fluorescently labeled nanoparticles (e.g., rhodamine-tagged nanopolystyrene) with optical/fluorescent imaging.
  • Vascular physiology and myography for vasoactivity and endothelial function of the aorta and other arteries.

  • Ex vivo placental perfusion.
  • Microsurgical cannulation & vessel preparation.
  • Zeiss Axio Scan (or other multifluorochrome slide scanner) and morphometry software.
  • Histology processor, embedding station, microtome, and auto stainer.
  • Research caliber light and immunofluorescence microscopes and transmission electron microscopes
  • Excellent written and oral skills.
  • Experience in preparing/presenting data summaries and reports.

  • Standing or sitting for prolonged periods.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Laboratory environment.
  • Moderate noise.
  • Exposure to rats/mice and hazardous chemicals.
