Position Overview:

Woolpert is hiring an experienced Survey Team Leader to join our team and lead the technical and professional development of our land surveyors and geospatial technicians in the Midwestern United States. The team will consist of field and office resources operating across Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan. The Land Surveying Team Leader will be responsible for overseeing the planning, data collection, development, and delivery of quality land surveying products, managing and directing field and office survey staff, and supporting the professional growth of the survey team members. This role requires strong leadership skills, technical expertise, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Expectations include boundary determination, pricing & scoping, quality assurance and quality control of surveying products and procedures, communication with internal and external clients and other survey discipline team members, and crew scheduling. The candidate should have foundational knowledge of ALTA surveying, topographic, control/geodetic, and boundary/ROW determination.

This position may work a hybrid schedule in either our Chicago, Illinois or Indianapolis, Indiana offices. Remote work options also available for the right candidate in Illinois and Indiana.

What You Will Do:





    • Technology Expertise: Possess sufficient technical expertise of cutting-edge surveying technology, including total stations, GNSS, LiDAR (terrestrial, wearable, and mobile), and UAS.


    • Survey Project Management: Duties include client management, business development, proposals, and financial management of survey and geospatial projects. Provide technical expertise and leadership during the proposal and planning phases.


    • Collaborative Consulting: Coordinate with geospatial specialists and integrate aerial mapping and remote sensing technologies. Prepare surveying and mapping solutions to support project/program requirements.


    • Resource Management: Coach, mentor, direct, and delegate tasks to technical team members to ensure quality project deliverables.


    • Surveying Deliverables: Perform analysis for complex boundary surveys and prepare associated plats and boundary descriptions. Conduct advanced calculations involving field survey data. Prepare or review survey reports and legal descriptions.


    • Quality Control: Assist with the preparation of plans and conduct quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) on said plans. Ensure project quality control and quality assurance processes are in place.


    Team Management:



    • Responsible for effective planning and scheduling of workload and performance of team members.


    • Manage survey staff resource levels, including hiring and supervising all technical survey staff and field teams.


    • Strategic planning and oversight of resources, technology investment, and client support directly impacting performance of the Midwest based team.


    • Diligent and routine coordination with Survey Discipline leadership and contemporaries on production and capacity, including sector technology, human resources, and accounting managers.


    • Facilitate the personal and professional growth of team members through coaching, training, and development activities.


    • Routine coordination with program and project management staff in Woolpert's markets.


    • Support internal sales efforts, including proposal preparation, project estimating, and participating in interviews by sharing technical knowledge.


    • Maintain and monitor fleet and equipment assets.


    • Represent the firm at various functions as needed.




What You Will Bring:





    • Bachelor's degree or a minimum of 8 years of related work experience in the land surveying field.


    • Professional Survey License(s). States of Indiana and Illinois are required. The qualifications to get licensed in Wisconsin and Michigan would be advantageous.


    • Proven experience in Land title research, metes & bounds preparation, and boundary reconstruction/Boundary analysis


    • Demonstrated ability to organize and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.


    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.


    • Strong technical proficiency, including Microsoft Office products, Trimble software/hardware, AutoCAD C3D.


    • Experience in coordinating, planning, and scheduling survey tasks and field crews.


    • Strong client interaction skills and the ability to set and uphold project standards.


    • Ability to quickly adapt and respond to industry changes and internal initiatives.


    • Valid driver's license with an insurable driving record.


    • Ability and availability to travel as needed to project, client, or corporate locations.
