At BNL, the Energy & Photon Sciences (EPS) Directorate is working to solve grand challenges that will create solutions and security for the nation's energy system. Advances in basic science are the underpinning of transformational discoveries that rely on Brookhaven's data-driven research, cutting-edge synchrotron science, and leadership in energy science through real-time study of applicable energy materials in working conditions. As part of the capabilities and science focus of the EPS, the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is a state-of-the-art medium energy 3 GeV (3-billion-electron-volt) electron storage ring. The facility offers scientific and industrial researchers an array of instruments (beamlines) using x-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared light to enable discoveries in clean and affordable energy, high-temperature superconductivity, molecular electronics, and more.

Position Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and communicative Client Facing Engineer to serve as the technical bridge between the Data Science and Systems Integration Division and other groups responsible for state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation. This role involves understanding stakeholder needs, leading small teams to deliver tailored technical solutions, and ensuring the successful deployment and continued stewardship of the technology stack in support of the facility's mission. The ideal candidate combines strong engineering expertise, excellent interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills and will adopt a pragmatic and agile approach.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with stakeholders and technical teams to deliver customized, maintainable solutions.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of stakeholder requirements, solutions, and project milestones and work with others to ensure timely delivery of projects.
  • Act as a facilitator to translate stakeholder requirements into technical specifications and actionable plans.
  • Provide support during implementation, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Facilitate demonstrations, training sessions, and technical workshops.
  • Gather stakeholder feedback and relay insights to internal teams for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure stakeholder satisfaction by proactively addressing technical concerns and questions.
  • Utilize agile project management techniques for delivery of projects and mentor engineers in software project management.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • At least 3 years of related technical experience.
  • Experience in a client or stakeholder-facing technical role (e.g., solutions engineer, field engineer, technical consultant).
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Some international travel may be required.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with modern software programing languages such as Python, C++, Rust, Go etc.
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Atlassian Jira, Microsoft Project, Primavera P6.
  • Project management experience or certifications (e.g., PMP, Agile).

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Lifting, moderate weights 15-30 lbs.
  • Physical coordination and balances.
  • Arm/hand dexterity.
  • Vision, good near and normal color.
  • Continuous walking/standing/office work.

  • The successful candidate will be hired at the appropriate level commensurate with depth and breadth of experience.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $92,300.00 - $118,000.00 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
