Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

Join us as an Engineer Associate in the Traffic Engineering Branch at Maricopa County Department of Transportation, where you will support work to understand how traffic flows across our over 2,000 miles of roadway and be a part of the process to enhance them. Under general supervision, you will perform various complex technical engineering duties in the field of traffic engineering, requiring consideration and analysis of multiple variables and the use of independent judgment in decision-making.

We Require

  • Four years of professional pre-registration civil engineering experience; Or

  • Four years of experience leading and performing senior-level technical engineering work; Or

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field

  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) may substitute for the experience

  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

We Also Value

  • Experience in reviewing and evaluating technical documents

  • Experience in developing cost estimates

  • Experience in conducting quantity takeoffs on construction plan submittals

  • Experience in the project development and construction of roadway projects

Job Contributions

  • Review and evaluate technical reports, such as traffic impact studies, and make recommendations on traffic mitigation improvements

  • Review construction plans and verify compliance with departmental design standards, guidelines, and practices

  • Conduct quantity takeoffs on project bid items for constructability

  • Represent the department at private development progress and issue resolution meetings

  • Conduct field reviews of various construction and maintenance projects to verify, correct, and supervise the update of asset inventory

  • Evaluate, test, and recommend the acquisition, implementation, and adaptation of new technology to enhance data collection, data governance, and data integrity

  • Prepare detailed asset inventory needs based on the review of as-built construction drawings, field inspections, and general construction knowledge

  • Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • Exerting 20 - 25 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions

CADD level laptop/desktop, OpenRoads, Bluebeam, Traffic Studies Database, SignCAD, Synchro, Microsoft 365, and Adobe Pro

Protective equipment required

Hard hat, high-visibility vest, and boots
