Primary Function
The Assistant Controller supports the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in managing the accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and administrative functions of Abhe & Svoboda Inc. This position ensures accuracy and integrity in all financial operations, provides leadership to the accounting and administrative staff, and drives process improvements that strengthen both corporate and field operations. The Assistant Controller plays a hands-on role in improving financial systems, maintaining compliance, and developing the finance function to better support the company's operational goals.
Location and Reporting
This position is based at the company's headquarters in Jordan, MN and reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting and Accounting Management
* Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management.

* Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP.

* Lead the monthly close process and prepare timely, accurate financial statements.

* Develop and maintain robust internal controls and accounting policies.

* Support the CFO with financial reporting and provide accurate, reliable data for decision-making.
Team Leadership and Development
* Supervise and mentor accounting staff and the front-office administrative employee, fostering accountability, accuracy, and teamwork.

* Build a finance and administrative function that supports operations - ensuring project managers, superintendents, and field teams receive timely, accurate information that helps them perform efficiently.

* Collaborate with the CFO to align team structure and resources with company growth and strategic priorities.
Front Office and Administrative Oversight
* Manage one front-office administrative employee responsible for reception, phones, and general office support.

* Oversee company licenses, permits, and registrations to ensure they are properly maintained, renewed, and compliant.

* Provide direction and oversight to ensure the administrative role effectively supports the Corporate Safety Director, field staff, and other corporate functions as needed.

* Ensure office processes and communication channels are efficient, organized, and consistent with company standards.
Benefits Plan Administration and Compliance
* Manage the company's benefit plan financials, including coordination with the Third-Party Administrator (CBAS) and benefit vendors.

* Ensure accuracy and compliance in VEBA Trust accounting, 401(k) audits, and related regulatory filings.

* Support HR in implementing benefit plan changes and annual renewals, ensuring correct financial setup and reporting.

* Provide financial oversight and analysis of benefit costs to assist in companywide planning and budgeting.
Payroll and HR Coordination
* Work closely with Payroll and HR to ensure payroll-related entries, benefit deductions, and tax payments are accurately recorded.

* Support audits and reconciliations that connect payroll data to general ledger accounts.

* Partner with HR to improve efficiency and accuracy in employee-related financial processes.
Audit, Tax, and Compliance
* Coordinate annual financial, VEBA, and 401(k) audits; prepare required documentation and schedules.

* Ensure timely filing of sales/use, excise, and other state tax returns.

* Maintain compliance with DOT, IFTA, and other fleet and operational regulatory requirements.

* Support the CFO in managing insurance renewals, tax submissions, and other compliance-related filings.
Systems, Processes, and Operational Support
* Evaluate and improve accounting and administrative systems and processes for greater efficiency and accuracy.

* Partner with operations to streamline financial reporting and field-facing processes to reduce administrative work and improve cost tracking.

* Support integration between accounting and operational data systems to enhance visibility into job costs and performance.
Development and Growth
* This position offers professional growth into operations finance, supporting the CFO in connecting financial management with field performance, efficiency, and project execution.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience
* Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

* CPA or CMA preferred.

* Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in a leadership or supervisory capacity.

* Strong understanding of GAAP and corporate accounting principles.

* Experience in construction or project-based environments preferred, but not required.

* Advanced proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel; ERP experience (e.g., Viewpoint, Foundation, Sage, or similar) is a plus.

* Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

* Proven ability to lead teams and collaborate effectively across departments.
