Architectural Designers (Senior Living), SmithGroup, Inc., sub. of SmithGroup Co., Inc., 301 Battery Street, 4th Floor, San Francisco, CA:

The Architectural Designer (Senior Living) prepares architectural drawings, renderings and design assignments, programming and planning for senior living communities, under general supervision of a senior licensed Architect. He or she receives instruction on specific assignment objectives and independently provides solutions for these objectives. Job duties performed under general supervision include:




  • Performs architectural assignments under general supervision.
  • Coordinates drawings with drawings of other disciplines.
  • Coordinates specifications with drawings to meet project requirements.
  • Relates building design concepts to building codes, zoning ordinances, senior living licensing agencies, and other external issues.
  • Assists on consulting with manufacturers, researches and proposes materials and products that are acceptable in senior care environments.
  • Participates in construction administration including responding to RFI's, preparing sketches and addendums (CCD's), visiting the construction site to gather information, prepare punch lists, and answer contractor questions as owner's representative.
  • Advances designs developed by others and creates and develops planning and design concepts for small, senior living projects under general supervision.
  • Assists with assessment of design requirements, including licensing requirements for Residential Care and Skilled Nursing Facilities.
  • Details internal features of a building.
  • Has knowledge of basic drawing details and researches more complex details.
  • Prepares presentation drawings and otherwise assists in presentations both internally and externally.
  • Regularly works with design software (CAD, Revit, Sketchup, etc.) as well as Microsoft Office.
  • Telecommuting is permitted, 2 days a week.



Minimum requirement: is a bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent degrees accepted) in architecture, or a closely related architecture or design field of study and 2 years of experience in any related occupation working on architectural and senior living design. Basic annual pay range is ninety-five thousand dollars to one hundred thousand dollars per year for full-time employment and standard company benefits.
