As a Hog Procurement Business Manager at Smithfield, you will play a critical role in ensuring the efficient and cost-effective supply of livestock to meet plant needs. This position allows you to lead and coordinate a team dedicated to purchasing and receiving livestock, ensuring adherence to company policies and USDA regulations while maintaining humane handling practices. Working cross-functionally with the entire Smithfield hog procurement team, you'll have the opportunity to optimize supply chains, improve purchasing strategies, and contribute to cost management, all within a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Procurement Leadership & Budget Management: Leads procurement activities for the plant, ensuring alignment with budget plans for labor and facility costs. Provides leadership and development for buyers and plant procurement staff. Purchasing & Scheduling: Purchases and schedules high-quality market pigs using pricing tools and parameters set by procurement management. Utilizes technology to identify opportunities for producers to improve operations. Compliance & Regulatory Management: Ensures compliance with plant-specific and regulatory requirements, including USDA Packers and Stockyards Program and FSIS Humane Handling regulations. Actively participates in the preparation of contracts, bids, proposals, and vendor agreements, ensuring obligations are met by both Smithfield and suppliers. Market & Supplier Relationship Management: Monitors market trends and hog supply dynamics within the plant's supplier territory. Builds and maintains strong business relationships with suppliers, providing feedback and data insights from plant databases. Supplier Engagement & Data Management: Meets with suppliers to understand their needs, identify challenges and opportunities, and strengthen long-term relationships. Supports supplier databases with updated information, production knowledge, and competitor analysis. Team & Business Objectives: Ensures business objectives are met by buyers and the plant procurement team. Represents Smithfield at industry meetings, conventions, and supplier events to strengthen brand presence. Leadership: Drives a positive employee experience through leadership by way of employee development and coaching.
WHAT WE'RE SEEKING: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in animal science, agricultural business, agricultural economics, economics or business and 5+ years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 2+ years of demonstrated experience in team management/development or project leadership is required. Truckers Quality Assurance-Advisor Training, preferred. Pork Quality Assurance-Certification or Advisor, preferred. Prior knowledge of the pork or food industry. USDA bondable. Must be able to travel 20% or more of the time.

The majority of the time is spent in an office setting at production plant. The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area. Frequently required to sit; stand; walk; bend; stoop; crouch; squat and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
