THE POSITION

This role functions as a Driver License Examiner for PennDOT, playing a crucial part in enhancing highway safety through the administration of standardized tests that assess the skills and abilities of applicants seeking non-commercial driver licenses. In addition to conducting these evaluations, the examiner also supports the Driver License Center by assisting customers at the counter, where a vital responsibility includes scrutinizing identity documents to prevent identity theft and fraud. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will assess the physical and driving qualifications of applicants, as well as evaluate the mechanical condition of vehicles to ensure they meet the established safety standards for driving. You will conduct various vision tests, including telebinocular and color perception assessments, to gauge applicants' visual capabilities. Additionally, you will administer both non-commercial and commercial driver license knowledge examinations to verify that individuals possess a solid understanding of the Vehicle Code and traffic signage. Your responsibilities will also include conducting pre-trip, skills, and driving tests for non-commercial licenses in accordance with departmental guidelines, while scrutinizing applications, registrations, and permits for any signs of irregularities or fraudulent activity. You will determine the specific characteristics of vehicles to ensure that the appropriate tests are administered and will inspect motor vehicles for compliance with safety features such as inspection stickers, lights, and windshield wipers.

Furthermore, you will review a variety of documents, including applications, birth certificates, Social Security cards, marriage certificates, court documents, proof of residency, and various immigration and citizenship documents, to verify their authenticity. Utilizing multiple systems and databases, you will authenticate identity documents to establish an individual's identity and eligibility for a driver's license or identification card, while also identifying potential fraud and preventing identity theft. You will process test results and applications, issuing driver licenses and identification cards to those who meet the eligibility criteria. In addition, you will provide customers with essential information regarding driver's license renewals, duplicates, out-of-state transfers, motorcycle licenses, and commercial driver's licenses, ensuring they are well-informed about the various restrictions and endorsements associated with commercial licenses. Lastly, you will generate Restoration Requirements Letters upon request for customers who visit in person, effectively communicating relevant information related to their inquiries.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 80 hours bi-weekly
  • Work hours are 7:15 AM to 3:45 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Overtime and travel as needed
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Driver License Examiner Assistant (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of experience obtaining, evaluating, and providing information to the public.

Special Requirements:
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent and twenty-one years of age at the time of application.
  • This position requires no suspensions or revocations of a driver's license during the five-year period immediately preceding employment.
  • All employees in this job hired after February 28, 2022, are required to obtain an active unrestricted Class M driver's license within the first six months of employment or before the end of the probationary period and maintain it during employment.
