THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Equipment Operator A, you will complete a wide-range of assignments under the guidance of the forest maintenance supervisor of the Cooks Run Maintenance Division. You will provide assistance with maintenance projects, forest fires, recreational programming, general maintenance of equipment and tools, and management activities throughout the district. Primary duties entail the maintenance of state forest roads and facilities through the operation of heavy equipment such as graders, backhoes, bulldozers, dump trucks, road tractors, and high-lifts. The completion of thorough safety checks and inspections of all tools and equipment is a top priority.

Within this role, you will assist in the prevention, control, and suppression of wildfires, in addition to assisting with conducting search and rescue operations on DCNR lands in accordance with current DCNR Search & Rescue Policy. You will also be tasked with conducting minor repairs to buildings and structures, snow removal, ATV trail maintenance, facility security and protection, and delivering supplies and equipment and necessary.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • This is a seasonal, full-time position with no healthcare benefits. There is not an option to buy into health care benefits. The season runs from approximately March 2025 until November 2025 at which time the employee will be placed on leave without pay. The employee will automatically be returned to employment in March 2026.
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday - Wednesday, and 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Thursday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Overtime may be required for emergency situations such as wildland fires and search response.
  • Travel is required between headquarters and work sites.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Six months experience in the operation and maintenance of large vans, buses and single-chassis trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or more; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania driver's license.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires possession of a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL).
