Position Description

The Director of Internal Audit - Professional Practices position is responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership and acts as the steward for tools & methodologies, policies & standards, communication & training, quality assurance & improvement program, and stakeholder reporting within Atlantic Union Bank's Third Line of Defense organization, including Corporate Assurance and Advisory Services (CAAS) and Credit Risk Review (CRR).

The Director of Internal Audit - Professional Practices promotes risk awareness in the company through a positive and collaborative relationship with executives, business leaders, and staff. This leader drives continuous improvement initiatives in our audit and credit review methodologies, process, and tools/solutions and is transformational in establishing and maintaining guidance governing all audit activities to conform with internal and professional standards. This role reports directly to the Chief Audit Executive and is a leader in our organization.

Position Accountabilities



  • Leads the overall design, development and implementation of CAAS and CRR tools & methodologies, policies & standards, communication & training, quality assurance & improvement program, and stakeholder reporting
  • Drives the design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement in CAAS and CRR strategies and processes, including methodology enhancements
  • Develops and provides training to Teammates on internal audit policy, process, and methodology updates
  • Leverages expert internal audit knowledge to assess the relevance of gaps in audit practices and potential exposures / impact to the business and bank overall
  • Oversees critical department processes, including but not limited to Annual Risk Assessment, Issue Management, and Third-Party Risk Management and Oversight
  • Develops and maintains a strong rapport with senior executives and other key stakeholders to ensure discussions are trusted, constructive, and valued; works diligently to understand the company's strategies and risks
  • Acts as the Regulatory Liaison: coordinates and communicates the department's activities with key regulators including preparation/delivery of material required for examinations
  • Ensures that CAAS and CRR methodologies, tools, and practices comply with the Institute of Internal Audit standards and meet regulatory expectations
  • Proactively keeps team informed of current and emerging trends, developments, and practices affecting the professions of internal auditing and credit risk review within the banking industry
  • Owns board and other stakeholder reporting, ensuring completeness, consistency, and accuracy
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested by the Chief Audit Executive


Organizational Relationship

This position reports to the Chief Audit Executive and regularly interacts with the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.

Position Qualifications

Education & Experience



  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive audit or examiner experience with exposure to Professional Practices in the financial services industry
  • Professional designation as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) required. May also possess a secondary designation as Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) or Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM). IIA Quality Assessor Certificate desired.


Knowledge & Skills



  • Superior oral and written communication; comfortable making presentations to board members, executives, groups of professionals, and external stakeholders
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with related authoritative guidance, specifically the Institute of Internal Auditors' (IIA) Standards, SR 13-1, and SR 20-13
  • A successful track record developing strong relationships across a broad range of leadership functions
  • The ability to resolve and communicate key issues to all levels
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple demands
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and effectively challenge
  • Excellent critical thinking skills, including the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.



Salary offered will be based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. This position is also eligible to participate in either an applicable incentive compensation plan for the position or a discretionary profit sharing bonus program.
