Founded in 1990, IPG pioneered the development and commercialization of optical fiber-based lasers, a critical technology in the high-energy laser (HEL) system program. Role Overview: The Optical Engineering Technician reports to the Chief Electrical Engineer and provides hands-on technical support for optical system testing, alignment, assembly, and characterization of high energy laser systems. This role executes optical test procedures, builds optical prototypes, maintains laser equipment, and supports engineering activities through practical optical and photonics skills. Key Responsibilities: 
      
 Optical Testing & Characterization
 
      
 
       
 Execute optical test procedures using power meters, beam profilers, spectrometers, and interferometersPerform laser beam quality measurements, power output testing, and wavelength characterizationOperate thermal imaging systems and photodiodes for laser diagnosticsDocument optical performance data and measurements in laboratory databasesSet up optical test benches and measurement systems
 
 
      
 Optical Assembly & Alignment
 
      
 
       
 Assemble optical components including lenses, mirrors, prisms, and fiber optic assembliesPerform precision optical alignment using autocollimators, alignment telescopes, and laser sourcesBuild prototype optical systems and beam delivery assembliesHandle fiber optic splicing, termination, and connector installationMaintain clean room protocols and optical component handling procedures
 
 
      
 Laser System Operations & Maintenance
 
      
 
       
 Operate high-power laser systems safely following established safety protocolsPerform routine maintenance on laser sources, cooling systems, and optical componentsMonitor laser performance parameters and identify performance degradationReplace optical components and perform system calibrationsSupport laser safety compliance and training activities
 
 
      
 Documentation & Manufacturing Support
 
      
 
       
 Maintain accurate records of optical measurements, alignments, and system configurationsSupport creation of optical test procedures and assembly work instructionsAssist manufacturing with optical assembly processes and quality controlHelp troubleshoot optical production issues and train production personnelSupport optical component qualification and supplier evaluation activities
 
 Requirements  Education & Experience: 
      
 Associate degree in Photonics Technology, Optical Engineering Technology, or related technical field2-5 years hands-on experience in optics, laser systems, or photonics manufacturingMilitary optical/laser training or equivalent technical certification acceptableDefense, aerospace, or laser system experience preferred
 Technical Skills: 
      
 Proficiency with optical test equipment (power meters, beam profilers, spectrometers, interferometers)Experience with precision optical alignment and assembly techniquesKnowledge of laser safety protocols and optical component handlingAbility to read optical drawings, specifications, and assembly proceduresFamiliarity with fiber optic systems and connector technologies
 Physical Requirements: 
      
 Excellent manual dexterity for precise optical alignment workGood visual acuity and color discrimination for optical inspectionAbility to work in clean room environments and follow contamination control proceduresAbility to lift up to 35 pounds and work with precision equipment
 Preferred Qualifications: 
      
 Experience with high-power fiber lasers or solid-state laser systemsKnowledge of beam delivery systems and optical damage mechanismsFamiliarity with thermal management of optical systemsExperience with optical modeling software (Zemax, Code V, or similar)Certification in laser safety (LSO training)
