JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Penn State is seeking a dynamic and experienced instructor to lead an eight week experiential, hands-on course titled "Turfgrass Machines & Maintenance" within the Agricultural Systems Management (ASM) curriculum. The course is designed to provide students in the Golf Course Turfgrass Management Program with practical, in-depth knowledge and skill development related to the operation, maintenance, and safe use of turfgrass-specific equipment.

The ideal candidate will bring both industry experience and a commitment to student-centered instruction in both a lab-based or field environment, guiding learners through the fundamentals of turfgrass machinery, including maintenance protocols, diagnostic techniques, and safety practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Course Instruction & Delivery
    • Deliver engaging, hands-on instruction in turfgrass machinery operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
    • Use real-world scenarios, demonstrations, and equipment to reinforce applied learning.
    • Provide clear safety training and enforce adherence to safe operating procedures.
  • Curriculum & Materials Development
    • In conjunction with the Program Director, design, update, or refine course content and instructional materials.
    • Ensure course materials align with industry standards and ASM/Turf program objectives.
  • Equipment & Facility Oversight
    • Oversee the setup, maintenance, and storage of turf equipment used in labs or field exercises.
    • Coordinate equipment usage schedules and ensure proper upkeep.
  • Student Engagement & Support
    • Provide timely feedback and hands-on support to students as they learn and practice mechanical and operational skills.
    • Foster a positive learning environment that encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and professionalism.
  • Assessment & Grading
    • Design and implement appropriate assessments (practical exams, skills checklists, lab reports).
    • Evaluate student performance objectively and maintain records in accordance with university guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • Required:
    • Demonstrated expertise in turf equipment operation, maintenance, and repair (e.g., mowers, sprayers, utility vehicles, etc.).
    • Strong communication and instructional skills, especially in hands-on learning environments.
  • Preferred:
    • Prior teaching or training experience in a technical or vocational setting.
    • Familiarity with Penn State's Turfgrass Management or Agricultural Systems curriculum.
    • Certifications or credentials in equipment safety, small engine repair, or related mechanical systems.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily outdoor or lab-based instruction involving physical activity and equipment handling.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs with or without accommodation and work in varied weather conditions during field instruction.
  • Flexible scheduling may be required.
