As part of this strategic integration, Boynton Health is pleased to announce the creation of several Mental Health Clinical Manager roles, who will provide strategic leadership to designated mental health service lines. The Clinical Manager, Short-term and Group Mental Health Services plays a key role in ensuring students have access to high-quality mental health care and that mental health staff are supported through strong leadership, infrastructure, and vision.

General Statement of Responsibilities:

The Clinical Manager for Short-Term Individual and Group Counseling Services at the Boynton Health Clinic provides strategic oversight and clinical leadership for the development, delivery, and continuous enhancement of short-term, goal-focused individual and group therapy programs at the University of Minnesota. This role is integral to advancing student mental health outcomes through high-access, high-impact clinical services designed to address a broad spectrum of student concerns in a timely and responsive manner.

Reporting to the Director of Counseling and Therapy, the Manager is responsible for overseeing operations of short-term counseling services and ensuring effective service coordination and care quality across clinical modalities. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, this position provides direct clinical services to eligible students, reinforcing a shared commitment to student-centered, evidence-based care.

The Short-Term Individual and Group. Counseling/Therapy Manager must be a licensed mental health clinical professional with experience providing clinical and/or administrative supervision. This new position will implement a short-term, goal-oriented counseling program to improve UMN mental health services access. They are also responsible for promoting a safe, equitable, and respectful environment where concerns can be addressed effectively.

Detailed Job Responsibilities:

Leadership Responsibilities (25%):

  • Provide strategic clinical supervision, consultation, and operational oversight to counseling and therapy staff delivering short-term individual and group services, ensuring alignment with best practices and institutional goals.
  • Lead the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines for short-term counseling and group therapy, in collaboration with the Director of Counseling and Therapy, consistent with ethical standards and regulatory compliance.
  • Analyze service utilization data, clinical outcomes, and operational trends to inform decision-making, identify gaps, and support continuous improvement in short-term service delivery.
  • Develop and present strategic recommendations to the Director of Counseling and Therapy and/or Senior Director of Mental Health regarding program enhancements, resource allocation, and growth opportunities.
  • Ensure timely, student-centered, and high-quality care delivery through effective workflow design, staffing coordination, and quality assurance measures.
  • Plan and facilitate regular team meetings to support communication, foster team cohesion, and promote a culture of clinical excellence.
  • Oversee onboarding, orientation, and competency-based training for new staff and trainees, ensuring consistency in care delivery and alignment with the short-term service model.
  • Partner with the Operations Team to implement and evaluate continuous quality improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, equity, and clinical outcomes.
  • Coordinate and deliver ongoing training for team members to ensure knowledge of emerging practices in short-term and group therapy and evolving student needs.
  • Lead internal communication strategies and collaborate with colleagues to promote awareness and accessibility of short-term and group counseling services across the campus community.
  • Represent the short-term individual and group therapy programs in institutional workgroups and strategic planning initiatives aimed at advancing integrated, responsive, and student-centered clinical services.

Clinical Responsibilities (75%):

  • Provide scheduled in-person, virtual, and drop-in culturally and trauma-responsive mental health initial intake and ongoing therapy and counseling appointments to currently enrolled University of Minnesota students.
  • Facilitate referrals to on- and off-campus supportive services, including academic departments, university support services, and community mental health care (i.e., specialized services for higher-level care needs).
  • Assess risk and safety and provide immediate referrals and access to services as appropriate, such as urgent counseling.
  • Provide backup urgent/crisis counseling coverage to UMN students during regular clinic hours via phone, telehealth, and in-person in the clinic, depending on the clinic's needs.
  • Coordinate services with campus partners (e.g., UMN Care Team, BCT, DRC, ISSS, UMPD) as appropriate.
  • Provide clinical supervision and/or participate in training programs for psychology and master's level practicum students whom they may supervise.
  • Promote a safe, equitable, and respectful professional team environment where concerns can be addressed effectively.
  • Participate in any needed campus-wide response that requires mental health support.
  • Participate in a rotation of end-of-day coverage that may go beyond clinic hours to assist with urgent clinical needs.
  • Provides after-hours on-call mental health crisis support as needed.

This position also performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS plus at least eight years of experience, or an advanced degree plus at least five years of experience, or a terminal degree plus at least two years of experience.
  • One year of experience allows for independent licensure as a mental health therapist in the state of Minnesota.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting a culture that respects and advances diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical supervision and training.
  • 5 years or more of clinical experience in providing short-term and/or specialized mental health services

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years or more of supervisory experience over mental health professionals.
  • Experience working with individuals with a broad range of acuity needs.
  • Demonstrated experience with trauma-informed, culturally responsive care,
  • Experience in change management or who have led initiatives or quality improvement processes.
  • Familiarity with the University of Minnesota and community resources and procedures.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $100,000 - $115,000/year depending on education/qualifications/experience
