Job Summary

The Senior Data Engineer is a dual role responsible for the administration, development, configuration, support, and maintenance of SQL Server relational databases and modern cloud data architectures. This role requires strong traditional database administration skills combined with a solid understanding of Azure-based technologies including Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Lake, and Azure Synapse Analytics. This Senior Data Engineer / DBA will play a key role in modernizing our data infrastructure, enabling self-service analytics, improving data quality, and driving the enterprise data strategy forward in a secure, governed, and efficient manner.

Job Duties

Data Engineering Responsibilities (70%):

  • Design and implement scalable data pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Synapse Pipelines, or Microsoft Fabric.
  • Ingest, transform, and store structured and semi-structured data in Azure Data Lake and Synapse Analytics.
  • Develop and maintain data models, ETL/ELT processes, and analytical datasets for downstream consumption.
  • Collaborate with data analysts, BI developers, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements.
  • Leverage Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and Lakehouse architecture to build integrated data solutions.
  • Optimize data storage and compute costs in Azure environments.

Database Administration Responsibilities (30%):

  • Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server instances across development, testing, and production environments.
  • Monitor system performance and proactively optimize SQL queries, indexes, and database structures.
  • Implement and manage backup, recovery, high availability (HA), and disaster recovery (DR) strategies.
  • Ensure data security, access controls, and compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Perform regular maintenance tasks such as patching, indexing, and statistics updates.
  • Automate routine DBA tasks using PowerShell, T-SQL, or other scripting tools.

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or equivalent field preferred.
  • 4+ years of experience administering SQL Server databases.
  • 5+ years of experience developing ETL packages for moving and transforming data.
  • 2+ years of experience with Microsoft Fabric and Lakehouse architecture.
  • Exposure to other Azure tools such as Azure Purview.
  • Familiarity with scripting in modern scripting languages for automation and orchestration.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate or similar
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate or similar
