Job Details

The Chief Medical Officer is a key senior management position responsible for providing leadership, management, and strategic direction to ensure the delivery of high quality, cost-effective health care. The CMO is responsible for clinical initiatives focusing on quality, safety, patient experience and physician engagement and works to improve clinical performance, oversee conversion to evidence-based medicine, overseeing safety initiatives and quality assurance programs in collaboration with departmental leadership, hospital administration, and regional and system level clinical leaders.

The CMO provides leadership and direction to the Medical Staff inclusive of the employed physicians and the independently aligned community physicians, functioning as a liaison and facilitator for all communications affecting the Medical Staff. The CMO works closely with the Chief of the Medical Staff to evaluate and manage physician performance optimizing quality of care to patients and serving as a liaison between the physicians and administration. The CMO assures compliance with corporate policies and by laws to assure medical staff efforts meet or exceed standards of the various accrediting and approving bodies and is in-line with Jefferson's mission, vision, and values.

In addition to day-to-day and strategic administrative responsibilities, it will be important for the CMO to maintain clinical practice. Administrative physician leaders within Jefferson typically maintain 20-40% clinical practice. Details of clinical/administrative split will be determined in consultation with the Chief Clinical Officer.

Job Description

  • Serves as a lead clinical resource for operational teams partnering with multidisciplinary teams including hospital leadership, medical directors, department leaders, case management and practice administrators, to support health system goals and achieve efficient clinical operations, consistent adherence to practice standards, superior clinical outcomes, and unparalleled patient experience.
  • Liaison with Safety team to ensure engagement in operational initiatives and proactively plan for safety initiatives. CMO will be responsible for informing leadership of safety events that could result in trends and designing with the safety team clinical initiatives around these events when appropriate.
  • Champions and drives quality and safety by providing leadership and guidance in the development of data-driven and evidence-based accountability systems and scorecards; links individual, organizational, regional, and enterprise-wide goals and objectives related to quality, safety, and effective care management with outcomes to drive continuous improvement.
  • Works closely with the medical staff and administrative leadership in the further development and implementation of a regional referral network that leverages the market position of Jefferson Health and its clinical strengths while identifying and pursuing opportunities for further growth, alignment, and affiliations, collaborates with stakeholders based on alignment of purpose, mutual benefit, transparency, and trust.
  • Engages with physicians/physician leaders to consistently inform and monitor provider understanding of changes impacting the organization and region; ensures medical staff is aligned with organizational goals; commits to participating in regular structured meetings (Medical Executive Committee, Medical staff meetings) with key physician leadership and physicians to inform and receive feedback; Assists in recruitment and selection of key physician leaders in accordance with Medical Staff bylaws when applicable. Ensures a culture of safety by ensuring the professionalism of the medical staff.
  • Collaborates with the Chief Operating Officer and senior leaders across Jefferson in complex problem-solving to design access to services across the continuum of care, while also maintaining quality of care that is aligned with respect to the needs and cultural norms of the population served; assists in guiding the organization and region from a strategic, structural, clinical, and electronic information perspective as it transforms from inpatient and outpatient care to a seamless care delivery across all markets. Aligns with the administrative team to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Partners with the Jefferson CMO community to address issues at a systems level and ensure alignment, reliability, and best practices across all regions.
  • Manages Medical Staff Office and oversees credentialing and privileging process.
  • Assures medical staff compliance with organizational policies and ensures continuous survey readiness for regulatory bodies, including CMS, DOH, The Joint Commission, and other specialty certifications. Develops and implements corrective action plans as required.
  • Participates in medical staff development, including continuing medical education, leadership development of other physicians, and participation in search committees as requested.
  • Partners with the DIO to create a culture of education, promote the teaching mission of Jefferson Abington Hospital and advance the learning environment for the Residency Programs.
  • Model interactions with colleagues, patients, visitors, and other staff in a manner consistent with the values of Jefferson and its Code of Conduct.
