Under the direct supervision of the Gas System Operator or Senior Gas System Operator. assists in maintaining the integrity of the Orange and Rockland gas transmission and distribution systems in a safe, reliable, and economic manner. This includes (responding to / or participate in the) implementation of emergency transmission contingencies, the operation of strategically located Remote Operated Valves, and adjusting system pressures. The Associate Gas System Operator must develop an understanding in the operation of the gas transmission and distribution systems as well as develop the knowledge, expertise and technical proficiency required to use sound judgment and make timely decisions.
Core Responsibilities
- As directed, adjust gas system pressures and flows to maintain system integrity, particularly during peak load periods or emergency conditions by remotely operating gate stations and district regulators using the GOSS SCADA system.
- Monitor and adjust gas deliveries as directed to meet system load requirements as well as participate in balancing contracts across the gas supply portfolio.
- With some guidance, recognize abnormal operating conditions and implement corrective action as directed when responding to GOSS SCADA system alarms. Notify Gas Emergency Response Center and provide direction to reporting field crews and supervisors at the various locations as specified in Gas Control operating procedures and guidelines.
- Access daily wealth forecast data and participate in determining projected gas distribution load utilizing the Neural-net model, or similar day look-up.
- Access the respective pipeline Electronic Bulletin Boards and retrieve the schedules necessary to complete the confirmation process for gas deliveries on GDO Natural Gas Transaction System as well as verify all contract information is accurate prior to the daily close-out.
- Provides support in directing power generation users to modify gas burns in managing hourly and daily objectives.
- Monitors measurement data to ensure log-sheets are accurate and variations remain below 2%. Where discrepancy exceeds 2% document and notify office support staff.
- With some general guidance, supervises or otherwise directs company work forces during routine inspections and maintenance as well perform pressure and flow-rate adjustments as requested to support testing and calibration.
- With some general guidance, performs bi-monthly testing of all ROV's and document results of each test.
- Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree and 2 years general utility systems experience (i.e. gas, electric, steam, water, sewer, etc). or
- Associate's Degree and 4 years general utility systems experience (i.e. gas, electric, steam, water, sewer, etc). or
- High School Diploma/GED and 5 years general utility systems experience (i.e. gas, electric, steam, water, sewer, etc).
Relevant Work Experience
- Must have excellent computer skills and the ability to interface with Gas Control operating systems. Required
- Must have an aptitude for numerical and mathematical accuracy. Must have knowledge of gas pressure and flows. Required
- Must be well organized, detail oriented, and flexible to handle multiple assignments and deadlines. Required
- Must possess excellent oral and written communication as well as interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with all levels across the organization. Required
- Must have strong analytical and technical competence necessary to make sound decisions as required. Required
- Must have a valid driver's license and the ability and willingness to work and travel to various corporate and company supported training school locations. Required
- Must be willing and able to work a rotating shift schedule including nights, weekends and holidays as required. Required
- Must have a demonstrated proficiency in the use of computer applications, including Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel). Required
- Must be willing and able to complete and pass psychological testing and evaluation. Position requires sitting for long periods of time. Required
- Must successfully demonstrate the operation of the system through GOSS SCADA as well as successfully complete the confirmation and gas day close-out process on the GDO application within a period not to exceed 1 year. Required
- Must develop an in depth knowledge of the gas system and the ability to make adjustments in meter station takes and district regulator stations by adjusting gas system pressures and flows to effectively utilize pipeline deliveries and avoid costly penalties. Required
- Must develop working knowledge of department operating guidelines and procedures. Required

- Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
- Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
- Due to extensive training and qualifications requirements a minimum of a 2 year commitment is required.
- This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing as required by the Department of Transportation.
