What You'll Do

This position will be located at our Corporate Office: 2355 W Pinnacle Peak Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85027

The Investigator is responsible for the analysis of existing and new accounts to identify negative trends and change in member transaction activity for fraud and suspicious activity leading to deposit, debit card, ATM, wire, ACH, and loan risk, check fraud, and anti-money laundering. The role analyzes accounts identified on risk filter reports daily and performs necessary actions to mitigate risk and reduce potential financial loss.

The Investigator utilizes findings to recommend processes and/or procedure enhancements to mitigate loss exposure. The role researches and investigates fraudulent/suspicious transaction activities and irregular business practices within the Credit Union and contributes to the protection of the Credit Union's assets by partnering with internal business areas and other financial institutions.

  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of Credit Union products and services applicable to investigations, loss prevention, and security to identify key issues and propose solutions.
  • Conducts research and analyzes member transactional activity to identify risk and prevent loss from various types of fraud including but not limited to Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) activity, check kiting, Automated Clearing House (ACH), wires, debit card, bill pay, remote deposit capture, loans, etc.
  • Performs complex research analysis and documentation of account activity and uses independent judgment to determine appropriate actions that remove or minimize the Credit Union's fraud and/or anti-money laundering (AML) exposure.
  • Resolves and monitors irregular, fraudulent, and suspicious business practices within the Credit Union.
  • Interacts with various Credit Union associates and management in the resolution of Fraud/Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) alerts/cases including providing general knowledge, reoccurring support, feedback, and follow up to ensure risk mitigation.
  • Prepares comprehensive reports of analysis and investigation by compiling investigative notes, documentation, and resolution up to and including Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs).
  • Conducts case related interviews with potential suspects and member victims via phone and in person.
  • Refers and escalates complex cases to Senior Investigative staff, as appropriate.
  • Creates and presents internal training regarding fraud trends.
  • Attends monthly organizational meetings, as directed by management, to stay abreast of current trends; understands emerging fraud related practices and standards; participates in educational opportunities; reads professional publications and participates in professional organizations.
  • Evaluates referrals of suspected fraud from Credit Union branches and departments for further investigation.
  • Assists with law enforcement inquiries.
  • Complies with all related federal, state, and industry laws and regulations pertaining to banking.



What You Bring

  • High School Diploma Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice, business or a related field. Preferred
  • 3 to 5 years years of retail banking and/or back-office operations experience with emphasis on assessing deposit and lending risks with thorough knowledge of retail products, operations, systems, and policies and procedures. Required
  • 3 to 5 years years of experience conducting investigations for the banking industry and/or law enforcement agencies including Fraud, AML, Credit, or Risk. Required
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to think quickly, challenge assumptions, and consider alternative perspectives. (Medium proficiency)
  • Ability to perform in high-stress situations and work in a team environment. (Medium proficiency)
  • Knowledge of and experience with investigations, investigative techniques, interviewing, security, and fraud prevention. (Medium proficiency)
  • Broad knowledge of retail and commercial banking inclusive of teller operations, new account opening, and lending practices. (Medium proficiency)
  • Thorough knowledge of banking laws, regulations, and banking policies and practices including but not limited to Reg CC, Reg E, privacy and identity theft, remote deposit capture/image deposit, Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) activity, chargebacks, new accounts, check kiting, and Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FACTA). (Medium proficiency)
  • Advanced knowledge of banking laws and federal and state government laws/regulations including Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), USA Patriot Act, and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). (High proficiency)
  • BSA/AML Certification within 1 Year Required
