Job Title: Rink Operator

Department: Recreation

Classification: Non-Exempt

Pay Range (hourly): $19.14 - 23.08

Position Summary: Performs a variety of tasks that involve customer service, building maintenance, and rink operations and duties necessary for the daily operation of the City of Aspen Ice Facilities.

Supervision Exercised and Received: Position works under the general supervision of the Ice Supervisor I & the Ice Facilities Manager.

Essential Job Functions:

Customer Service

* Provides service to customers in a helpful and friendly manner. Operates office equipment, which includes: calculator, computer, cash register and copy machine. Answers the telephone, checks voicemail and operates music system. Checks daily cash count & prepares the deposit. Registers and assists with the operation of figure skating and hockey classes. Assists with adult/youth hockey operations. Collects admission and sells passes and retail sales items.

Building Maintenance

* Maintains the ice arena building. May be involved with the opening and closing of the building. Cleans facility, including: locker rooms, rest rooms, mopping of floors, restocking supplies and replacing light bulbs. Empties trash cans and replaces liners. Cleans player's boxes, walkways and bleachers. Scrubs and paints wall surfaces as needed. Performs other duties relative to building upkeep as required or assigned.Position may require removal of snow and ice from walkways, parking lots, roofs and vehicles, including general safety inspection of snow prone areas.

Ice Maintenance

* Keeps daily logs. Checks fluids & assists with maintenance of the ice machinery to include but not limited to the Zamboni and edger. Monitors Zamboni motors and batteries and inspects mechanical components. Assists with the installation of the ice sheet. Operates the ice resurfacer and edger machines.

Sales and Sharpening

* Inspects and sharpens rental and customer ice skates. Handles the merchandise sales of skating supplies.

Special Events

* Assists with the set up and take down of skating shows, hockey and broomball tournaments.

  • Innovation: Demonstrates technical expertise in ice arena management and ice resurfacing technologies, including Zamboni operation. Uses logic and reasoning to identify solutions to operational challenges and seeks opportunities to improve ice quality and facility efficiency.

  • Communication: Communicates concisely and effectively through email, written reports, and in-person interactions. Adapts communication style to various audiences and settings.

  • Interpersonal: Possesses strong interpersonal skills, including empathy, courtesy, and cooperation. Relates well to individuals from diverse backgrounds and works respectfully and effectively with others.

  • Technology: Utilizes ice arena equipment and technology efficiently. Demonstrates willingness to adopt new technologies and adapt job duties to support innovation and operational improvements.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience: One year of experience in general ice maintenance, and customer service experience.

Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, and Email.

Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Colorado driver's license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date. Must possess First Aid and CPR certification or be able to obtain within six months of hire.

Desirable Qualifications:

* Previous ice arena experience is preferred

NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.

Position Type and Work Hours:

  • Intermittent part time, hours vary dependent on programming.

  • Evenings/Weekends: Required depending on special events, facility needs, or seasonal programs.

Work Environment:

  • Indoors: Work is primarily done in an ice arena, with cold temperatures and exposure to ice, slipping risk, etc.

  • Outdoors/Off-Site: Meetings and trainings in other city facilities.

  • Exposure to cold, heat, exhaust, fumes, etc.

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Visual Acuity: Ability to bring objects into focus, such as monitoring ice conditions or reading gauges and safety signs.
  • Balancing: Maintaining equilibrium while working on slippery surfaces or during equipment operation.
  • Bending: Bending or positioning oneself to move equipment or tools from one level to another.
  • Carrying: Occasionally up to 50 lbs., such as rink equipment, signage, skate sharpening tools, or maintenance supplies.
  • Crouching: Bending body downward and forward by bending leg and spine to access low or confined areas.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, or equipment platforms.
  • Eye/Hand/Foot Coordination: Performing work using two or more body parts while operating ice resurfacers or maintenance tools.
  • Gripping/Grasping: Ability to apply pressure with fingers and palm when handling tools or maintenance items.
  • Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping through use of hands or fingers, such as managing hoses, shovels, or skate rentals.
  • Hearing: Perceiving and comprehending the nature and direction of sounds, including alarms, equipment, or customer interactions.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knees to perform tasks like repairs, skate fittings, or ice maintenance.
  • Lifting & Carrying: Up to 50 lbs. unassisted, such as ice arena equipment, skates, tools, or maintenance materials.
  • Pushing/Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force to move equipment like skate racks, goal nets, or ice resurfacing attachments.
  • Reaching: Extending hands and arms in any direction to access tools, clean surfaces, or adjust equipment.
  • Repetitive Motions: Making frequent or continuous movements, such as sweeping, ice resurfacing, or sharpening skates.
  • Sitting: Remaining in a stationary position, such as during equipment operation or monitoring systems.
  • Standing: Ability to sustain position while assisting patrons, managing the ice, or performing cleaning duties.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, such as during clean-up or ice repair.
  • Talking: Communicating ideas or exchanging information with staff and patrons.
  • Walking: Ability to traverse rink areas, locker rooms, or facility grounds.
