Physicist Postdoctoral Fellow

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
United States, California, Berkeley
1 Cyclotron Road (Show on map)
Jul 10, 2025

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Physics who will work in the Electron Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) Research Group.

In this exciting role, you will perform electron EDM experiments using a cesium atom fountain at Berkeley Lab and collaborate on the development of a francium EDM atom fountain experiment at TRIUMF (Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics) to set limits on new physics beyond the Standard Model.

What You Will Do:

  • Assist in the design, development, assembly, testing, and operation of new apparatus, and under direct supervision plan electron EDM experiments and collect and analyze data from these experiments, make presentations, and write papers on these and related experiments as part of a team.
  • Perform supporting activities and experiments such as on properties of cesium and francium atoms, magnetic shielding, and laser optics, also as part of a team.
  • Work closely with LBNL staff scientists, associates, affiliates, engineers, technicians, other Postdocs and students, and collaborators from other institutions (e.g.: TRIUMF).
  • Communicate results through internal reports, internal and external presentations, including at meetings, and through peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized physics journals.
  • Proactively promote and participate in matters relating to safety and environmentally sensitive work practices including adherence to ES&H policies and attending required training.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May mentor undergraduate and graduate students and visitors in unison with senior project team members.

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. degree in physics or related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in fundamental physics and experience in performing precision measurements (for example: dark matter searches, axion searches, neutrino experiments, etc.) as evidenced by publications in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in the development, design, construction, and/or modification of experimental apparatus (hardware) used in research.
  • The ability to work effectively in a collaboration that includes, among others, engineers, computer scientists, scientific staff, technicians, students, and faculty, and communicate effectively with all.
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with one or more of the technologies used in the EDM experiments, such as: magnetic shielding, single-mode polarization-maintaining fiber and free space laser optics, laser atomtrapping and cooling, instrumentation and control systems engineering, and familiarity with accelerator-based experiments.

Notes:

  • Appointment Type: This is a full-time, 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • Salary Information: The monthly salary range for this position is $ 5,562 - $9,136 and is expected to start at $7,716 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.
  • Background Check: This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work Modality: Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification is required to access Berkeley Lab sites (for more information click here).
