JOB SUMMARY
Works under minimal supervision to provide skilled technical assistance in preparation of specimens for ultra-structural cellular examinations and/or diagnosis in support of research and/or clinical medicine.

The Department of Cell Biology is looking for a Electron Microscopy Technician. The successful candidate will be supporting users for experimental design, samples prep, and image acquisition for Electron Microscopy applications, addressing cell and tissue biology.

Main activities:



  • Discuss experimental setup, including sample preparation, acquisition preferences and image analysis possibilities with users and colleagues.
  • Together with the Head of the facility and team members be involved for day-to-day operations.
  • Implement and adjust EM applications and workflows.
  • Follow-up on ongoing support and projects in the core.


The ideal candidate will have/be:



  • Experience in Biomedical or Biological Sciences, either through a degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience in Electron Microscopy applications, and sample preparation, in life science research is plus.
  • Technology minded.
  • Team player with strong social, communication and didactic skills.
  • Well-organized, structured, and able to plan and execute tasks.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Can thrive in a fast-evolving environment.
  • Good English skills, both oral and written.


Other experience that would be a asset include:



  • Experience in follow-up of life science research projects.
  • Experience in working in a microscopy core facility is plus.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required



  • Education
    Completion of two years of specialized training in Medical Technology area or
    Completion of two years of college with emphasis in Biology or related field or


  • Experience
    1 year Laboratory work as coursework.


JOB DUTIES



  • Obtains and prepares tissues, tissue cultures, and other specimens, utilizing techniques of fixation, embedding, sectioning, and staining of specimens for microscopic examinations.
  • Operates electron microscope to examine thin sections of specimens for any abnormalities.
  • Screens and evaluates specimens for further observation by principal investigators or other members of professional research or clinical staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for care and minor maintenance of electron microscope used by laboratory personnel by inspecting equipment for malfunction or damage on daily basis.
  • Photographs and develops negatives of tissue using electron microscope for diagnosis, study, and/or publications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
