Overview
The Deputy Fire Marshal ensures fire prevention, life safety and education of Utah State University campus, through performing fire code inspections of all buildings under the jurisdiction of the Utah State University Fire Marshal's Office through enforcement of the International Building, Fire and NFPA life safety codes. The Deputy Fire Marshal will work independently at times under the direction of the Fire Marshal and Assistant Fire Marshal. The Deputy Fire Marshal will rely on experience, knowledge and judgement to accomplish fire prevention, fire and life safety throughout our Utah State University Campuses.

Responsibilities
  • Assists with keeping an accurate inventory of fire extinguishers and keeping an accurate service record for all campus extinguishers.
  • Keep accurate and detailed documentation on all building fire inspections and follow through on all violation notices including re-inspections.
  • Perform fire inspections, fire sprinkler suppression systems inspections in all buildings under the jurisdiction of the USU Fire Marshal's Office.
  • Keep accurate and detailed documentation for fire sprinkler system inspections performed and follow through with code violations.
  • Assists with fire prevention and education of portable fire extinguisher training for university faculty, staff and students.
  • Attend meetings for new and remodel building construction projects as assigned.
  • Assist with and conduct emergency evacuations drills in all residential student housing and other occupied university buildings.
  • Take on-call after hour shifts on a weekly basis.
  • Assist the local fire department with fire alarms which may occur during on and off duty hours.
  • Maintain knowledge of locations for all University buildings, this includes, the fire alarm master panels, remote annunciators, fire sprinkler risers and control valve locations.
  • Maintain and update building incident pre-plan maps for accurate locations of fire extinguishers, fire department connections, fire risers, fire sprinkler control valves, fire alarm panels and other pertinent life safety equipment as necessary.
  • Keep informed of building fire prevention techniques.
  • Attend all required USU policy training courses.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant and Fire Marshal's


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must understand International Building and Fire Codes, as well as State of Utah regulations, NFPA 13 and 13R, NFPA 72, NFPA 20, NFPA 24 and NFPA 25
  • Obtain and maintain International Code Council Fire Inspector One Certification, State of Utah Fire Marshal Level 1 Sprinkler Tech certification and State of Utah Fire Marshal Level 3 Fire Alarm Tech certification within 18 months from date of hire.
  • Must be able to comply with the University Vehicle Use Policy.
  • Valid driver's license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials.
  • Job offer is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with life safety systems and equipment.
  • International Code Council Fire Plans Examiner Certification.
  • International Code Council Commercial Building Inspector Certification.
  • International Code Council Building Plans Examiner Certification.
  • Previous experience in fire prevention or related field.
