While the unit prefers a full time, 40 hour workweek, a 32 hour per week schedule would be considered. There is also an option to include a 4 or 8 week summer work break if desired. UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological support to UCSC students. SHS is deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities through equitable access and culturally competent, high-quality programs and services.
The Primary Care Program offers primary care and same-day care services, supported by on-site radiology, a
COLA-accredited clinical laboratory, and the campus pharmacy offering prescription and over-the-counter products. Counseling and Psychological Services, Case Management, and Psychiatry services are available for crisis intervention, mental health support, and outreach services.
Additional departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op, the Cove Collegiate Recovery Program (CCRP), where students receive harm-reduction and recovery services; CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources & Empowerment) the advocacy and prevention education office that supports those who have experienced sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; Optometry and Student Insurance and Referral Programs.

JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Associate Medical Director and/or Medical Director, the Physician Assistant provides primary ambulatory care and telehealth services as part of the Student Health Services healthcare team. The incumbent assesses health status, evaluates and manages illnesses or injuries, provides initial psychological evaluation, promotes wellness, disease prevention, and health education, and coordinates appropriate follow-up care, referrals, and case management. The Physician Assistant serves 16-20 patients per day, providing excellent medical care and attending to relevant psychosocial and developmental needs of university students. They also serve on health center committees as needed. The Physician Assistant provides input for the continuous improvement of services and understands the principles of patient-centered care and the importance of the primary care clinician delivering high-quality patient care.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $88.30 - $107.64/ hourly. Salary Commensurate with years of licensed experience as a Physician Assistant.

JOB DUTIES
90% - Medical Care
- Provides direct patient care, including in-person and telehealth visits, in the Student Health Center clinic.
- Provides clinical assessment and management of patients with routine health problems, episodic acute illnesses and stable chronic illnesses, minor injuries, routine gynecological care, and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases.
- Evaluates and manages depression and anxiety in collaboration with the counseling and psychiatric services available on campus and in the community.
- Orders, interprets, and communicates indicated screening and diagnostic exams.
- Recognizes and evaluates life-threatening situations, and initiates emergency treatment.
- Educates and counsels patients about physical and mental health, such as social habits, family planning, normal growth and development, and disease management.
- Provides support around issues commonly confronted by college students, such as sexual health, drugs and alcohol, and stress.
- Makes appropriate referrals.
- Performs minor procedures, such as laceration repair, incision and drainage, application of splints and casts, and treatment of minor burns.
- Initiates and manages care for patients requiring IV hydration or medication.
- Promotes continuity of care by assuming the role of primary care provider for patients with chronic or ongoing health issues using the principles of patient-centered care.
- Completes appropriate documentation and detailed charting, as well as billing and coding responsibilities in a timely manner.
- Participates in peer review, committee work, and special projects as requested.
- As a member of the health care team, promotes smooth functioning of services by assisting where help is needed, which may include occasional nights or weekends.
10% - Collaboration
- Works closely with other members of the clinical staff - physicians, nurses, technologists, pharmacists and ancillary personnel - to provide clinical care in the most efficient manner.
- Participates in Quality Management and other staff committees and activities directed toward monitoring and improving clinical care at UCSC Student Health Services.
- Contributes to special projects and outreach efforts.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
- Current State of California Physician Assistant license, in good standing
- Current DEA Registration
- Board Certification as a Physician Assistant (PA-C)
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
- Significant experience and background in a general medicine, urgent care, or family practice setting which is typically obtained after three to five, or more, years of post-training work experience
- Experience in medical management of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and gender affirming care
- Oral communication skills; excellent listening skills; ability to receive and give clear and concise information and communicate clearly and effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff members
- Written communication skills. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in writing with patients, colleagues, and staff members
- Demonstrated competency in working on a multidisciplinary team; ability to contribute to team effort

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
