Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $90,000 - $115,000.

Reporting to the Director of Data Services, this position is responsible for maintaining mission-critical databases and data integrations, while strategically guiding the transition of legacy pipelines to cloud-native platforms. This position applies advanced database administration concepts and campus objectives to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of options, issues, and data require an in-depth evaluation. Under general direction by the Director and the AVC of Data, Analytics, and Campus Business Processes, this position serves as UC Merced's technical lead for Oracle database environments - both on-premises and AWS-hosted - and provides specialized support for Oracle Data Integrator (ODI). This position collaborates with AWS Cloud Engineers, Data Engineers, and enterprise system owners to support reliable, secure, and scalable data architecture. Key Responsibilities:

  1. Oracle Database Administration: Administers, monitors, and optimizes Oracle database instances hosted locally and in AWS. Performs upgrades, patching, tuning, and ensures high availability, performance, and security. Develops and implements database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies.
  2. Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) Administration: Leads the maintenance, upgrade, and troubleshooting of ODI environments. Oversees agent configuration, load planning, error handling, and job orchestration. Develops and maintains data integration workflows and documentation. Evaluates existing ODI data flows to determine suitability for migration to cloud-based platforms such as Snowflake and Informatica.
  3. MSSQL and MySQL Server Administration: Provides administration, maintenance, and monitoring of Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL environments, including patching, tuning, backup and recovery, and access control. Supports integration with legacy applications and migration efforts.
  4. Cross-functional Collaboration: Works closely with AWS Cloud Engineers on infrastructure provisioning and performance. Partners with Data Engineers on end-to-end pipeline architecture. Collaborates with enterprise system owners and business units to ensure data reliability and alignment with operational goals.
  5. Governance, Documentation, and Support: Develops and maintains system architecture documentation, SOPs, and technical diagrams. Participates in data governance, access control, and compliance initiatives. Provides Tier 2/3 escalation support for database and integration-related incidents.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or related field from an accredited institution (required); and/or
  • Advanced degree in related field from an accredited institution (preferred; and
  • Five years of progressively responsible and technical related experience or equivalent experience/training (required).
  • Solid working knowledge of advanced analytics and business intelligence concepts such as data analysis, ETL, data warehousing, data lake, and cloud data platforms.
  • Proven experience as a Database Administrator with a track record of successful project implementations
  • Proficiency with ETL tools such as Informatica, DataStage, Fivetran, Databricks, dbt, or similar
  • In-depth knowledge of Oracle database architecture, administration, and performance tuning in both on-premise and AWS environments.
  • Advanced proficiency with Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) including agent management, repository upgrades, job design, and error resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage ETL/ELT workflows in ODI, and integrate complex sourcesystems into operational and analytical platforms.
  • Proficient with PL/SQL including writing efficient queries, designing database structures, and implementing stored procedures, functions, and triggers. Proficient in optimizing performance and error handling.
  • Demonstrated Linux skills including security management, user management, process management, troubleshooting and debugging. Proficient in developing and managing automation, data processing, scripting, and navigating the file system.
  • Working knowledge of Oracle security, backup/recovery practices, and high availability configurations in cloud environments.
  • Experience collaborating with cloud infrastructure functions, particularly AWS (RDS, EC2, IAM), to support hosted database solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated service orientation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to create technical documentation, follow data governance practices, and participate in institutional compliance efforts.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex data issues.
  • Strong analytical and design skills, including the ability to abstract information requirements from real-world processes to understand information flows in computer systems.
  • Strategic thinking and the ability to identify and recommend migration paths for legacy workflows to modern platforms like Snowflake/Informatica.
  • Familiarity with data quality and governance issues and requirements. Ability to create technical documentation, follow data governance practices, and participate in institutional compliance efforts.
  • Relevant Certifications (e.g. Oracle certifications, AWS certifications, Microsoft certifications; Snowflake certifications) are advantageous
  • Previous experience with database administration in a higher education setting. Previous experience with REP software systems such as Banner, PeopleSoft, Oracle Financials, and Salesforce.
