About UNOS

The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) is a private non-profit, charitable organization that serves as the nation's Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) under contract with the federal government. Based in Richmond, Virginia, UNOS provides vital services to meet the needs of men, women and children awaiting lifesaving organ transplants. UNOS members encompass every transplant hospital, tissue matching laboratory and organ procurement organization in the U.S., as well as voluntary health and professional societies, ethicists, transplant patients and organ donation advocates.

Position Description

The Communications Specialist will support an integrated communications strategy and execution of timely and engaging information about United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to UNOS staff. The Communications Specialist will bring strong content strategy and development, intranet and project management, writing, editing, UX and organizational skills to contribute to a wide variety of projects.

Key Responsibilities



  • Develop and implement internal communications strategies that align with organizational goals to:

    • Educate employees about business priorities and how they can contribute.
    • Promote resources that enhance the employee experience.
    • Foster employee engagement and transparency.
    • Increase leadership visibility and position employees as brand ambassadors.


  • Create and execute engaging content across internal channels, including news features, leadership communications, announcements, and campaign materials-ensuring content is timely, accurate, and aligned with the UNOS brand and voice.
  • Manage and maintain internal digital platforms, including the intranet and collaboration tools, ensuring intuitive UX, information accessibility, and alignment with ongoing content strategy.
  • Lead and support internal communications campaigns and initiatives, from planning through execution and measurement-analyzing performance data to inform and improve future communications.
  • Provide strategic consulting to internal stakeholders, advising on messaging, audience targeting, and channel selection to help meet communications goals.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of organizational meetings and employee-facing events, including logistics, talking points, presentations, and post-event communications.
  • Support change and crisis communications efforts, helping ensure employees receive clear, consistent, and compassionate messaging during periods of transition.
  • Assist with writing and editing across the Communications team, contributing to editorial reviews, content development, and brand alignment as needed.
  • Support and contribute to team-wide strategies that enhance departmental effectiveness, collaboration, and service to the organization.
  • Share best practices, and contribute to the continuous improvement of internal communications at UNOS.


Minimum Requirements



  • 5+ years of professional experience in a marketing or communications related function required.


Critical Skills



  • Professional experience in writing and editing content in a corporate communications setting and/or for print, online or marketing publication.
  • Experience in a project management role involving routine contact with clients and coordination with designers and writers.
  • Experience collecting and applying metrics relevant to a communications setting, and/or with quality management initiatives.
  • Experience in healthcare or health policy communications is helpful. Must provide work samples upon request.
  • Familiarity with the following preferred: HTML, Content Management Systems, specifically Microsoft 365 SharePoint.
  • Thorough knowledge of: Microsoft Word, Excel, and SharePoint
  • Strong project management skills.


Additional Skills & Qualifications



  • Experience with Salesforce/Marketing Cloud a plus.
  • Experience working with or for a mission driven, values based non-profit.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and within teams.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment and to adapt quickly as priorities change.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects for a diverse audience.
  • Ability to learn quickly and translate complex material into audience-appropriate communications.
  • Strong commitment to setting shared expectations and ensuring they are met.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail.


Education



  • Bachelor's Degree preferably in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or a closely related area, or equivalent work experience


Physical Requirements



  • General office demands

    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Frequent reaching, handling, and fine manipulation for using office equipment, filing, and managing paperwork.
    • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, mouse, and other office tools.
    • Occasional standing, walking, and bending.
    • Ability to lift up to 10-20 pounds occasionally.
    • Vision abilities required include close vision for computer work and reading documents.
