Position Overview

The Medical Writer II is responsible for generating and preparing draft clinical genetic testing reports for review by genomic analysts, geneticists, and laboratory directors. The Medical Writer II is also responsible for training Medical Writer I staff, organizing team coverage/scheduling, and participating in process improvement projects (validations).

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Compile clinical genetic testing results and prepare a draft report.
  • Develop sample reports for client and sale inquiries.
  • Assist in the testing and validation of novel report templates using internal software.
  • Participate in the planning, implementation, and testing/design of process improvements (workflow changes/software validation design).
  • Document workflow changes in appropriate laboratory procedure documents for accreditation requirements.
  • Responsible for assisting in the recruitment of Medical Writer I staff with the Director of Reporting and assist in training (including the development of training documents).
  • Responsible for organizing and chairing recurring team meetings with the Director of Reporting.
  • Computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Software, especially Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Familiarity with genetics terminology.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a particular proclivity to detail.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues via interpersonal skills in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage confidential information.
  • Ability to set priorities, multitask, and troubleshoot problems effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to become proficient with new software programs rapidly.
  • Ability to work with other departments and teams to implement workflow changes for novel tests or process improvement initiatives.
  • Visual acuity is required to view computer screen.
  • The ability to stand and/or sit for up to 50 minutes during each hour is necessary in order to draft clinical genetics reports.
  • The ability to maneuver throughout the company building is necessary to access computers.
  • Hearing acuity is necessary to receive warnings of potential laboratory danger and to hear telephones and doorbells.

  • Support and comply with the company's Quality Management System policies and procedures.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to act with an inclusion mindset and model these behaviors for the organization.
  • The Medical Writer II will initially work within standard office areas onsite in Marshfield, WI. The option to remain onsite, work hybrid (onsite and remote), or work 100% remote will be presented after one year of work upon approval of their director based on performance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in chemistry, biology, medical technology, life sciences communication or a related field. Coursework in genetics and laboratory experience with DNA is preferred.
  • 3 - 4 years of experience in genetic report writing is required.
  • Strong grasp of genetics principles, specifically zygosity and genetic variant nomenclature.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in team management.
  • Experience in scientific writing.

Salary Range:

$37,000.00 - $60,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Marshfield on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to be considered for company stock at hire and on an annual basis.
