Job Summary

The Midwest Generation Dispatcher is responsible for the real-time generation dispatch of the Midwest Duke Energy Generating Fleet. The dispatcher utilizes the Energy Management System (EMS) to adjust generating unit output and parameters in real-time, primarily following MISO and PJM dispatch instructions, to maximize unit value and minimize customer cost. Coordinate regulating, spinning, supplemental reserve, Ramp Up/Down, Short-term Reserve deployment. Dispatcher must assess multiple information sources quickly, understanding differing unit operating characteristics and costs to dispatch units at the best economic outcome.

Responsible for Real-Time generating unit offer updates to Midcontinent ISO (MISO) and PJM.Understand, interpret, and enter generating financial and physical unit offers to MISO and PJM.

Respond and execute orders from the MISO, PJM, DEI Energy Control Center (ECC), and or DEOK ECC for unit commitment, generation dispatch and/or system reliability.Perform real-time unit commitment of generating assets.

Maintain accurate records concerning unit commitment and dispatch activities and generating unit operation.Maintain detailed knowledge of generating unit operating characteristics at all times, including availability, derates, incremental costs, ramp rates, etc. to effectively utilize units to fullest potential.

Responsible for NERC Standard Compliance, including reporting of Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) status changes to DEI or DEOK ECC/PJM.

Responsible for the Night Reports for the DA award communication, LMP Charts, LMP prices in MISO/PJM.This also includes the communication to Stations of the DA awards.

Respond and execute orders from MISO and PJM concerning Load Reduction Programs in the Yukon software tool.

Be proficient with various software tools:EMS, COA, PowerOptix, MISO Communication System, MISO DSRI, YUKON, MISO/PJM Portals, ISO Analytics, PCI Analyzer.

  • Respond and execute orders from the MISO, PJM, DEI ECC and/or DEOK ECC for unit commitment, generation dispatch, load reduction, and/or system reliability. Perform real-time unit commitment of generating assets.
  • Maintain accurate records concerning unit commitment and dispatch activities and generating unit operation. Maintain detailed knowledge of generating unit operating characteristics at all times, including availability, derates, incremental costs, ramp rates, etc. to effectively utilize units to fullest potential.
  • Accurately complete the Night Reports and make proper communications with Stakeholders

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • In lieu of Bachelor's degree, High School/GED and 5 years related work experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5-7 years related work experience
  • NERC Certification
  • Knowledge of generation dispatch, energy management systems/supervisory control of generators
  • Knowledge of plant operations, power system operations, power trading,
  • Familiar with MISO/PJM Real-Time Market with corresponding settlements

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Attention to detail, make quick and accurate decisions, work under pressure
  • Basic level of power generation and systems,
  • Excellent verbal communication (listening and communicating clearly and accurately),
  • Ability to build rapport with generating unit, MISO/PJM operators, and control area personnel

Working Conditions

  • Onsite Mobility Classification - Work will be performed at a company facility
  • Normal office environment
  • Occasional site visits to generating station
  • Ability to work a 5 person/7-day rotating shift, including nights and weekends

Specific Requirements

  • PJM Generation Operator Certification must be obtained within the first 6 months in the position
