Position Description:

The Medical College of Wisconsin and the Department of Surgery, Division of Transplant Surgery are seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join the Solid Organ Transplant Surgery service located in Milwaukee, WI at Froedtert Hospital.

The Division of Transplant Surgery provides abdominal organ transplantation at Froedtert Hospital and Children's Wisconsin. The division provides general surgical services for patients with end-stage organ failure. The ongoing goals of the division are to provide state-of-the-art transplant-related services, laboratory and clinical research and teaching of residents and students.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

The Ideal Candidate is looking to begin or grow their career within a inpatient acute care and critical care setting who desires to be part of a thriving and very collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to providing direct patient care to patients within the inpatient and critical care setting.

In this role you will:

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring Transplant Surgery intervention in inpatient environment as a member of the Transplant Surgery APP Team .
  • Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the Transplant Surgery services.
  • Facilitates and communicates with patient, family, and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  • Evaluate quality outcomes for patients receiving care through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  • Acquire information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.
  • Round with attending team and presents assigned patients.
  • Perform minor suturing, complex wound management, line and tube placements and removal.
  • Provide critical care management in the Transplant ICU requiring ventilator privilege maintenance.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Preferred Experience:

* 2+ years' experience working as an independent Advanced Practice Provider in a Cardiothoracic Surgical role is highly desired.
* Previous experience working within Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiology, Pulmonary/Thoracic, or Cancer services is preferred.
* Strong preference for extensive experience with Cardiothoracic procedures, especially with Endoscopic Vein Harvest.

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies
