Your Role on the Team

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Imaging, the Ultrasound Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the inpatient and outpatient ultrasound services at the UCI Health - Irvine campus, ensuring efficient workflow, high-quality patient care, and compliance with regulatory and safety standards. The incumbent oversees the delivery of both routine and advanced ultrasound procedures, including abdominal, OB/GYN, vascular, small parts, and interventional exams, while serving in a leadership capacity within the department. Responsibilities include supervising ultrasound technologists through participation in recruitment, onboarding, training, and competency assessments, as well as conducting performance evaluations and administering corrective actions when necessary. The Ultrasound Supervisor ensures appropriate staffing coverage and scheduling to support inpatient, emergency, procedural, and outpatient imaging demands, with an emphasis on patient throughput, service accessibility, and minimizing delays in care. The role includes oversight of ultrasound equipment, coordination of preventive maintenance and service requests, and input on capital planning and equipment replacement needs. The Ultrasound Supervisor monitors the integrity and functionality of image workflows through PACS and RIS, working in collaboration with radiology informatics and IT teams to address workflow or integration issues. In addition, the Ultrasound Supervisor contributes to operational and capital budgeting, promotes cost-effective and sustainable practices, and leads departmental quality and safety initiatives. These include image quality review, protocol standardization, adherence to best practices in sonographic imaging, and maintaining compliance with accreditation standards set forth by The Joint Commission, ACR, and CDPH. The incumbent ensures that policies and procedures are up to date and aligned with institutional and regulatory guidelines. The Ultrasound Supervisor serves as a key liaison between technologists, radiologists, nursing teams, and medical staff to ensure timely, coordinated patient care. The role also includes leading service recovery efforts, participating in emergency and disaster preparedness planning, staying current on advancements in ultrasound technology and clinical applications, and supporting the implementation of new protocols, workflows, or systems. As a visible and engaged departmental leader, the Ultrasound Supervisor fosters interdisciplinary communication, promotes a culture of safety and excellence, and drives continuous improvement across all aspects of ultrasound imaging services.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, schedules and ability to maintain flexibility in a constantly changing environment
  • Must possess valid American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)with at least 3 specialties e.g., Abdomen (AB), OB/GYN (OB), Vascular Technology (RVT)
  • Graduate of an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program
  • Current BLS certification
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience and training
  • 5 years' experience as a Sonographer

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with accreditation processes
  • 3 years supervisory or Lead technologist experience
