Job Summary:




This position is a full-time research position to work on virology, molecular biology, immunology, and pathogenesis of infection and cancer. This full-time position involves research in virology, immunology, molecular biology and pathogenesis, including work to analyze recombinant viruses, cell culture systems and mouse models. Responsibilities include work with cell and molecular biology, virus growth and quantitation, recombinant DNA work, multiparametric flow cytometry, analysis of viruses and host responses in mouse models for determination of virus infection and of disease, including tumorigenesis. The position requires carefully following instructions for a wide variety of laboratory procedures that will be demonstrated or described, keeping excellent, well organized and up-to-date records of experiments, organizing samples for later analyses, ordering supplies in a timely and efficient manner, maintaining equipment in proper working order or promptly arranging for repair of instruments. Maintaining a neat and orderly laboratory is required. Laboratory administrative duties include placing orders for lab supplies, mailing packages to colleagues, helping with preparation of grant applications and manuscripts, preparation of slides and figures, and maintaining financial records. Occasionally, the incumbent will prepare and present results for presentation and group discussions and will instruct others in laboratory techniques when requested by the lab head. The incumbent is expected to work effectively with students, post-doctoral fellows and other lab members.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions
  • Preclinical virology studies, including virus pathogenesis (e.g. lung disease, tumorigenesis, autoimmunity), followed by tissue and cell isolation, processing and analysis. These experiments often involve time courses from days to weeks.
  • Multi-parameter flow cytometry and sorting, from sample preparation through collection and analysis.
  • Viral propagation and quantitation using cell culture and plaque assays.
  • Molecular biology work including DNA and RNA purification, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time reverse transcriptional polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), protein analysis, including antibody-based flow-cytometric analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); histological techniques such as tissue sections, staining and immunohistochemistry.
  • Detailed data collection and documentation plus analysis, interpretation and presentation.
  • Lab management duties, including ordering, record keeping and maintenance. After initial training in lab techniques, will also help to train and supervise students and new lab members.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications
Entry Level

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field


Intermediate Level

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
  • One (1) year professional level research experience



A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis


Preferred Qualifications
Entry Level

  • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field


Intermediate Level

  • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory


Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
  • Experience in one or more of the following: virology and/or immunology techniques, flow cytometry applications, use of mouse models, knowledge of R or Python
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as:
Entry - $46,274 - $58,861

Intermediate - $50,357 - $64,054.







The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
