DESCRIPTION

The Accountant works under the direction of the Accounting Manager, Gift & Foundation Accounting and is responsible for accounting and financial reporting related to gifts for the UC San Diego Foundation and the UC San Diego Campus. The incumbent is responsible for analyzing/reviewing financial reports, preparing journal entries, coding, data entry, and reconciliation of monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial records. Incumbent will provide routine fiscal advice and guidance to faculty, department fund administrators and Principal Investigators related to gift funds. Responsible for the setup and maintenance of gift funds in the accounting system.

Uses professional accounting concepts. Completes accounting assignments that are of moderate scope where analysis of data requires a review of a variety of factors and multiple sources. Exercises judgment within defined accounting procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. Has contact with internal and external resources on a regular basis. Applies policies and procedures to resolve a variety of accounting issues.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of accounting function and assignments. Demonstrated ability to apply theories and principles of accounting to various types of financial transactions.

  • Ability to apply more advanced accounting concepts to complete work assignments.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing. Proven oral, written, and communication skills to effectively interact with people in conversation and to compose correspondence using correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, editing, formatting, and proofreading skills to clearly and concisely provide information.

  • Working knowledge of financial transactions and systems, as well as related policy, accounting, and regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Working knowledge of common desktop / web applications. Demonstrated experience in the use of software applications such as Word and Excel for preparation of correspondence and spreadsheets, using a Windows environment. Ability to comprehend and implement new software applications.

  • Knowledge of analytical procedures used in accounting projects of moderate scope.

  • Demonstrated mathematical ability, with skill to comprehend and perform standard calculations. Ability to apply such knowledge to the task at hand. Ability to compile data, reconcile balances, and present numerical information in a logical, consistent and comprehensive report format.

  • Ability to analyze, comprehend, and evaluate detailed documents with accuracy. Ability to understand and implement Foundation's policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize tasks with strong use of initiative and precise attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines with competing requirements and complexity while working in an environment of fluctuating priorities and frequent interruptions. Use of appropriate follow-up techniques is required.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with ability to interact in a positive manner using tact, diplomacy, and professionalism.

  • Demonstrated ability to practice active listening as a technique to recognize issues or problem situations and apply resourcefulness in finding appropriate solutions to implement problem solving and use follow-through to ensure effective resolution.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Effort outside of the normal 40 hour workweek may occasionally be required.
  • Fiscal & Calendar Year End closing is a critical business period during which vacation requests may not be approved.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,600 - $100,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.07 - $48.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
