Job Summary
#CA-PS Under general supervision of the Office of Research (OR) IT Operations Manager, participate as part of the Operations Team providing IT support for system, service, and application administration to over 200 OR staff located on and off-campus. Operate as a skilled professional, with in-depth understanding, to independently install, configure, tune, upgrade, maintain hardware and software and provide technical support for supported systems. Plan, design, test, debug, implement, maintain, secure, troubleshoot and document systems and processes in accordance with client and/or department timelines, standards, and guidelines. Report, research, troubleshoot and resolve problems and support requests for Windows, Mac and Linux computer systems, data network infrastructure services, websites and their associated software and hardware. Perform compatibility testing, long-range planning and research of system hardware and software. Provide computer security consulting, implementation, and investigation pursuant to the UC Davis Cyber-Safety Program. Purchase IT-related software and hardware and maintain and update asset inventory. Serve as backup support to the Database and System Administrator. Collaborate with OR IT Development, Reporting and Project teams as required.
This is an essential position. Regular on-site presence is mandatory. A hybrid working environment is supported.

- Bachelor's Degree and/or at least 3 years of experience in Information Technology or related field.
- Experience with Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange and Office 365 services, distributed web authentication, LDAP, computing account management, and other similar technologies, as well as auditing software, centralized antivirus management, intrusion detection systems, secure remote access technologies such as VPN, secure authentication, secure authorization, and various other security hardware and software implementations.
- Experience providing technical support for physical and logical disk management, data encryption, printer and other device drivers, peripheral connection technologies and devices that use USB, FireWire, serial, parallel, and SCSI, numerous email clients, web browsers, and software programs and packages.
- Knowledge and deployment experience with latest versions of various operating systems including Windows, MacOS and Linux. Experience with the latest Microsoft Office product suite. Experience using and maintaining Windows Servers to provide file, print, messaging, and backup services.
- Knowledge of messaging and collaborative computing services including SMTP, Internet, and Microsoft Exchange.
- Knowledge and understanding of virtual computing environments and hypervisor platforms (e.g. Proxmox or VMWare) and administration of network-attached storage devices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a project focused environment, working on projects of various sizes, and delivering objects on time, within budget, and with a high degree of quality. Experience developing and maintaining Microsoft Access databases and FileMaker Pro.
- Experience with backup and recovery systems, performance tuning, and performing scheduled maintenance activities.
- Experience writing administrative scripts, utilities and programs for various purposes including automating system maintenance and configuration of the computer system, using C / KSH / BASH, VBS/WSH, awk, sed, scheduled tasks and cron jobs.
- Experience administering, supporting, and troubleshooting security hardware and software implementations, including hardware firewalls (OpenBSD PF, Linux IPTables, Juniper Netscreen, SonicWall, Cisco PIX, or equivalent), or VLAN management.
- Experience developing, implementing, and maintaining procedures for manual and automatic back-up of network data and programs; writing procedure manuals, user guidelines and training materials; and determining the effects of program modifications on highly integrated systems.
- Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) a plus.
- Possess exemplary customer service skills to follow through on customer requests to resolve problems and answer questions.
- Possess exemplary interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, presentation, documentation) to effectively communicate with staff, faculty, students, vendors, and consultants.
- Ability to assimilate technical concepts, terms, and material on a technical level with other knowledgeable users.

- Knowledge of relational database systems utilized in a network environment (e.g., MySQL and MS SQL Server) and database replication, backup, recovery, and optimization techniques.
- Knowledge of version control tools and practices (e.g., SVN, CVS, RCS, PVCS, GitHub), and maintaining monitoring systems (e.g., Nagios, Zenoss, Cacti, MRTG).

Department Overview The Office of Research (OR) is charged with advancing the research mission of the campus, which includes services and resources that enhance research and other creative endeavors, relationships with government and industry, policy compliance, and oversight of an infrastructure of organized research. The OR oversees over 22 organized research units, special research programs and projects, and central facilities with approximately 1,119 employees, $137 million in annual expenditures across multiple fund sources, and annual recharge income activity of $22 million. The OR also administers the campus' research support programs of approximately $2.7 million annually.
