Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Tulare Branch Facilities Manager, provide unskilled and semi-skilled building maintenance, grounds and custodial services to the Tulare Branch Laboratory facilities. Responsible for building inspection, preventative and routine maintenance. Performs miscellaneous grounds keeping functions and is responsible for monitoring facility security.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience with landscaping, light building maintenance, and/or custodial.
  • Experience in safely operating lawn mowers, power blowers, string trimmers, sprayers and other landscaping equipment.
  • Knowledge to safely operate power tools and equipment and skills to maintain tools and equipment in a clean and orderly manner, perform general cleaning tasks, and use common hand tools, i.e., screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, etc.
  • Flexibility to work effectively with other craftsmen and to assist when required.
  • Basic reading and writing skills, to effectively give and receive written instructions, interpret work schedules and maintain records.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a wide variety of individuals, to include co-workers, clients of CAHFS, individuals from other University units and government/outside agencies.
  • Knowledge of the correct application of the proper equipment, tools, or materials to a particular cleaning/maintenance assignment and knowledge to purchase, mix and apply chemicals and fertilizers commonly used in landscaping service and knowledge of drip irrigation systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Computer experience.
  • Groundskeeping experience.
  • Knowledge of approved safety devices and practices.
  • Background in general maintenance, with skills to perform maintenance and alterations to equipment/facilities.

Department Overview

The CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinarians who serve them, with diagnostic lab support service for disease control, enhancement of health management, and protection from diseases common to animals and humans. The Tulare Branch Laboratory services the needs of the livestock and poultry industries in its general location, providing diagnostic services in pathology, histology, bacteriology, serology, and molecular diagnostics. CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners who serve them, with a full range of diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, enhancement of health management, and protection from diseases common to animal and humans. In meeting this need, the CAHFS also serves as the backbone of California's disease warning system through its animal disease surveillance program. The system consists of four laboratories currently located in Davis, Turlock, Tulare and San Bernardino. Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and through revenue generated from user fees. An additional program, the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, is funded through a contract with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and horse wagering monies, and provides full-service drug testing and a pharmacology research and development program.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Ability to lift up to 70 pounds, utilizing equipment provided for assistance when appropriate. Ability to climb ladders to top of machinery, equipment and building and to work in tight, crowded conditions. Due to the nature of the essential responsibilities, this position is not eligible for remote work. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm (Work schedule might be slightly different due to weather condition or/and during the training period). Work flexible schedule/overtime as needed to complete projects and meet deadlines. Mandatory weekend and holiday rotation.
