Advanced Mechanical Analysis Engineer - Undersea Systems
Mix of Hybrid & Onsite work with some travel in the US about 20% We are seeking a highly skilled Advanced Mechanical Analysis Engineer to support the development of mission-critical systems in the defense and maritime sectors. This engineer will be responsible for structural and thermal simulations, mechanical integrity assessments, and collaboration across product development teams to ensure robust performance in extreme operational environments-including undersea and naval platforms. This role is ideal for engineers with a background in mechanical design and prototyping, who have transitioned into or are building deep expertise in finite element analysis (FEA) using tools such as ANSYS and MATLAB. Candidates should be comfortable with structural optimization, defense specifications (e.g., MIL-STD-22, TP-1688, NAVSEA 278), and multidisciplinary collaboration from early design through production.
Key Responsibilities
Perform structural, thermal, modal, and dynamic analysis using ANSYS, MATLAB, or equivalent simulation tools. Build and maintain finite element models that replicate operational loads, including shock, vibration, and environmental stress. Evaluate compliance with military specifications, such as MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-22, TP-1688, NAVSEA 278, and Shock Grade B. Work with cross-functional teams-mechanical design, systems engineering, manufacturing-to influence design decisions from prototype to production. Review and interpret CAD models and detailed technical drawings; provide actionable feedback for design optimization. Participate in design reviews, lead trade studies, and support root cause investigations of field or lab failures. Prepare technical documentation, including analysis reports, compliance findings, and risk assessments. Support and mentor peers in mechanical analysis methodologies, simulation tools, and defense-compliant design.
Basic Qualifications
B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field. Proven experience with ANSYS (Workbench or Classic) and MATLAB for advanced mechanical analysis. Strong understanding of structural design principles, including welds, joints, fatigue life, and thermal effects. Demonstrated proficiency with CAD platforms such as SolidWorks, Siemens NX, Creo, or Inventor. Familiarity with DFM/DFA, GD&T, and engineering change processes. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and design presentation. U.S. Citizenship is required; must be able to obtain or hold a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working on defense or naval systems, including chassis or undersea structures. Exposure to MIL-STD and NAVSEA compliance testing or analysis. Background in materials engineering, fatigue analysis, or metallurgy, particularly submarine-grade materials. Prior experience leading simulation efforts or mentoring junior engineers.
Required Skills / Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Science or Engineering or Mathematics.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with ANSYS and MATLAB analysis tools, and ability to train others on these tools.
Preferred Skills / Qualifications:
- Master's Degree.
- Good knowledge of material specifications and metallurgy, especially regarding submarine requirements.
- Knowledge of weld types (MIL-STD-22) and processes (TP-1688 and 278).
- Good proficiency with modeling CAD tools, especially Creo, to create mechanical models and drawings.
- Extensive knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication methods and technical, government, and industry standards.
- Collaborative, creative thinker with experience leading complex projects.
- Good communication skills with the ability to write technical papers and proposals.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development for yourself and others.
