Mechanical Engineer

Education: Minimum - Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) program in the United States or designated equivalents.

Experience: 2 years of engineering experience; 5+ years preferred; PE desired but not required.

Must be able to obtain US Government security clearance.

Job Description:

Spectra Tech is seeking a mechanical engineer that will be responsible for developing high quality detailed design packages, providing engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs, and providing expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of various projects. Design involves the preparation of conceptual engineering deliverables including detailed bills of materials and man-hour estimates, statements of work, design criteria, and other engineering deliverables. Candidate must effectively and cooperatively work as a team member of an integrated project team, or as a technical lead for a multi-discipline task and will routinely provide input to the design and project team. Responsibilities will include performing walkdowns and generating design documents and providing field support during project implementation. This position will require applying technical expertise using a wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field of Mechanical Engineering.

Qualifications

• Lead Mechanical design engineering efforts on a multi-disciplined project design team and apply mechanical engineering expertise to the design and analysis of special purpose equipment, pressure vessels, and interfacing systems, controls, and structural support elements
• Prepare or review complex calculations
• Review simple mechanical systems / equipment designs, and prepare complex system / equipment designs
• Prepare documented design input for drawing production (i.e., P&IDs, machine layouts, general arrangements, etc.); Review design input for simple mechanical systems / equipment. Perform engineering review of drawings
• Prepare or review equipment specifications; Prepare material specifications
• Prepare bid evaluations for systems and components. Solicits data from vendors
• Prepare or review simple reports / studies
• Develop single-discipline/simple-scope project budgets, schedules, and project work plans; Monitor own work to ensure it is completed within budget and on schedule
• Use effective written and oral communication skills to convey information to project team members and managers
• Present written technical information in a clear and concise manner in all deliverables
• Prepare reports and deliverables that are clearly understood and meet client requirements; Communicate clearly in meetings with client and summarizes meeting notes in a clear and timely manner
• Communicate with vendors via clearly written and complete specifications, and via bid evaluation activities
• Identify applicable standards for technical tasks
• Maintains and utilize a working knowledge of accepted engineering design standards and practices in the execution of design work that will meet the client's needs and conform to company standards; Ensure conformance to standard methods of analysis, evaluation of results, design procedures, and presentations of conclusions and recommendations
• Monitor the work of assigned staff on technical matters pertinent to project assignments; Maintain assigned tasks within schedule and budget to fit the needs of the projects
• Attend project meetings and perform field walkdowns
• May mentor new engineers
• Essential skills and experience:
• Experience with specialty equipment (e.g., gloveboxes, pressure vessels, fume hoods, etc.) design and analysis a must; Similar project experience will be considered
• Experience with producing engineering designs and analysis for piping, HVAC, or radioactive material handling systems; Experience with more than one type of system is a plus
• Experience with ASME B31 and/or AG-1 and N509/510 codes
• Proficiency in computational engineering analysis software such as ANSYS, AFT Fathom, Arrow, Impulse, etc., or similar

Responsibilities

• Qualified candidates will coordinate and perform mechanical design engineering activities
• Piping focus - work may include designing and modifying ASME B31.3 piping systems: equipment sizing and selection (pumps, tanks, heat exchangers, valves, etc.), pipe support sizing and selection, P&IDs, piping isometrics and layout drawings, as-built drawings, generating bill of materials and scopes of work supporting procurement and subcontracts
• Candidates will also support installation and startup of designs in the field
• The ability to communicated with the craft and their supervision is critical
