Director of Service Extension

Job Objective: To provide strategic leadership and oversight for the Service Extension department, ensuring the effective delivery of social service programs, robust volunteer engagement, and sound facility management. This role aims to enhance ministry impact, community visibility, and revenue generation through program development, staff supervision, and collaborative partnerships.

Essential Functions:



  • Proactively pursue strategies to improve the Service Extension department, making sure to follow proper approvals and protocol.
  • Oversee operations and programming of all service units.
  • Manage delivery of emergency assistance and other social service programs.
  • Oversee the annual department budget.
  • Manage development activities to increase visibility and revenue, including kettles, direct mail, online gifts, and cultivating positive relationships with funders and other stakeholders.
  • Oversee special projects, including back-to-school backpack drives, summer fan drives, seasonal events, Angel Tree, and newspaper inserts, among others.
  • Oversee the coordination of the annual Service Extension Children's Camp.
  • Supervise, develop, and equip Service Extension staff and volunteers including oversight of the Annual Service Extension Field Leadership Retreat.
  • Supervise the implementation of Angel Tree and other seasonal programs in Service Extension communities.
  • Work with the Divisional Commander to strategically consider new avenues for increased ministry, visibility, revenue, and service.
  • Oversee Emergency Disaster services coordination for all Service Extension areas.
  • Work closely with the Field Unit Manager to shepherd and encourage Service Unit leaders.
  • Oversee preparation of United Way and other community funds applications utilizing DHQ resources, safeguards and approvals.
  • Work closely with the Community Relations Field Representative to further develop volunteers and multidisciplinary county volunteer teams.
  • Coordinate management duties for all departmental staff, including, but not limited to, annual reviews, hiring, terminations, coaching, encouraging, equipping, and empowering.
  • Ensure compliance, such as Safe From Harm, property site visits, social worker certification, MOUs, and facility leases



Additional Duties:



  • Create and promote a positive work environment through teamwork mentality and creative problem-solving.
  • Participate in divisional or territorial events such as Leadership Councils, Quarterly EDS (Emergency Disaster Services Committee), Monthly SE Dir Meetings, and Serve on DMPC (Divisional Mission and Program Committee).
  • Approve all departmental expenditures every week and sign off on other processes.
  • Cover responsibilities and/or delegate when administrative staff are using time off.
  • Represent the Salvation Army as the key spokesperson for the department.
  • Make presentations on Salvation Army matters before religious, civic, and funding groups.
  • Coordinate annual site visits for the leadership team and other site visits as appropriate for other divisional staff, donors and stakeholders.
  • As schedule allows, attend special events in the field and service unit Advisory Council meetings.
  • Ensure that facilities are well-maintained, and that repairs or renovations are made as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education: Four-year college degree in a related field (i.e., business, advertising, marketing, sales, or management) or commensurate level of professional experience required; Advanced Degree and/or Professional Certification highly desired.

Experience: Demonstrated successful experience in non-profit leadership including, but not limited to, business planning, strategic planning and organizational development.

  • Must be able to work with and supervise a wide variety of personalities
  • Must be discerning and able to make sound decisions based on a variety of information and input
  • Computer knowledge and skills are required, with software experience including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and Salesforce.

Communication Demands:

Travel: Occasional travel throughout division and territory, average 1 week/month

Driving: Must possess a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

Working Conditions: Daily work is performed in a typical office environment; may require some weekend and evening work. Event work may include hotels, indoor/outdoor venues, Corps Community Centers, and other public venues.
