Summary:
Reports to the Director Cardiovascular Services. Under the direction of the Clinical Director of Cardiology and the Attending Physician of Records is responsible for the organization of clinical services including scheduling in-service education and evaluation of Advanced Practice Providers. Under the supervision of the Surgeon provides pre- and post operative care of the surgery patients.

Responsibilities:
Participates in the hiring of Advanced Practice Providers including initial review of applications selection of candidates and participation in the interviewing and final selection process.

Develops schedules for the Advanced Practice Providers maintaining clinical coverage as required.

Develops and implements a program to certify Advanced Practice Providers in the performance of invasive procedures i.e. central line placement tracheal intubation etc.

Develops and maintains an ongoing in-service education program for Advanced Practice Providers including maintenance of ACLS certification.

Conducts annual performance evaluations of Advanced Practice Providers.

Serves as liaison for the Advanced Practice Providers with other hospital departments i.e. Nursing Service Laboratory Admitting Department etc.

Generates and maintains statistical information relating to the Surgery program.

Coordinates Advanced Practice Provider participation in the M&M and Quality Assurance Review Programs.

Acts as payroll coordinator for the Advanced Practice Providers.

Participates in the formulation of the annual budget and future budgetary planning as it relates to the Advanced Practice Provider group.

Performs other administrative functions within the Advanced Practice Provider area as deemed appropriate i.e. serving on appropriate committees.

Obtains and records detailed patient medical histories performs and records complete and detailed physical examinations records pertinent progress notes in the medical records prepares discharge and follow-up plans and initiates life-saving measures in emergency situations.

Generates initial patient orders for admission pre- and postoperative care including diet fluids activity tests x-ray studies and medications in collaboration with physician in accordance with hospital procedure. Assesses patient status and participates in the development of a patient care management plan with the nurses and attending physicians.

May perform other duties as requested by staff physicians or attending including care of selected patients on both the medical and surgical services. Such duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to surgical wound care evaluation of patients in the emergency room and performing other duties generally accepted as falling within the responsibilities of a house officer.

Maintains established hospital/department policies procedures objectives quality assurance safety environmental and infection control.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Must be a graduate of either a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant Program.

If a Nurse Practitioner must have a Master*s Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Nurse Practitioner certification or certification eligible by the American Nurses Association (ANA) or by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Licensed in the State of Rhode Island as a Nurse Practitioner; license must include prescriptive privileges.

If a Physician Assistant must be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Program with a B.S. degree.

Passing grade on certifying examination administered by the NCCPA.

Certified by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants

Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required.

Functions with demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of the aging processes human development stage and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

Three years* experience in the care of care of cardiac patients preferred.

Prior supervisory experience desirable.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals physicians* offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises.

Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact.

Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use safety equipment and protective clothing.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides direct supervision for up to 7 FTEs.
