Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs a variety of moderately complex duties related to the installation, modification and relocation of low-voltage systems to accomplish projects. Conforms to requirements of Caltech design guidelines and safety codes in accordance with Institute and regulatory agencies' safety standards and practices. This is an Essential Reporting position. An employee designated as essential reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery; and is expected to report to campus as soon as possible.
Essential Job Duties
- Responsible for following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
- Installs and troubleshoots electrical systems, including, but not limited to, low-voltage cabling pathways, raceway systems such as EMT, rigid conduit, flexible metal conduit, surface mounted raceways and cable trays.
- Installs communication cable systems and assists with the installation of fiber optic cables.
- Works proficiently with basic tools of the low-voltage installation industry including, but not limited to, conduit benders.
- May assist in various other duties such as estimating costs on small projects, operating Institute vehicles, and consulting with Institute community to help solve problems.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- Must supply and maintain a personal toolbox and tool pouch with the basic hand tools of low-voltage (<50-volts) work.
- Must be able to routinely lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Must be able to work on ladders, scaffolds, indoors, outdoors, attics, basements, in other crawl spaces as well as elevated mechanical platforms (boom lift, scissor lift, one-man lift) upon training.
- Must have adequate color perception to identify color-coded conductor wires.
- Ability to operate basic e-mail functions and e-mail software.
- Must possess, or have the ability to obtain by the date of hire, a valid California Driver's License, and maintain it throughout the course of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 years of work experience in a university or facilities setting is a plus.
- Ability to interpret low-voltage drawings and diagrams.
- Ability to read and interpret low-voltage product specifications.
- Low Voltage Certifications such as: BICSI, FOA, CSST, CLVST.
- CA Low Voltage License (C7).

Hiring Range
$27.75 - $33.50 Per Hour
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
