Job Summary

The Data Analyst provides quantitative and qualitative programmatic and data analysis support to Family & Community Medicine, ZSFG (FCM ZSFG) and specifically to the Family Health Center (FHC). The Data Analyst implements the FHC quality improvement (QI) program in consultation with the FHC medical director team and related departmental leadership. The Data Analyst will be responsible for the production of reports that will support the on-going assessment of clinical services delivered through the FHC. The position directly supports the FHC Quality Improvement Team and reports directly to the FHC Medical Director of Clinical Care and Practice Performance, but also reports to the FCM Department Manager and works closely with other members of the FHC Leadership Team. This position will be responsible for providing data and reports for multiple clinical quality and regulatory activities as assigned (examples include: perinatal activities and outcomes; FHC multiple quality indicators; chronic illness and primary care targets, such as immunization rates; colorectal cancer screening; hypertension control).

This position provides essential quantitative, qualitative, programmatic, and data analysis in support of the FHC clinical enterprise, as well as aid in the leadership of group medical visits at the FHC. The Data Analyst may also support the Family Medicine Inpatient Service, Adult Urgent Care Center, and residency program QI, in addition to the FHC. The Data Analyst supports FCM projects requiring EHR (Epic) data (visits, patients, patient demographics, census, panel management, health disparity metrics, etc.); convening and leading working groups/taskforces while collaborating with respective clinical leadership of the different services; designing and implementing data and QI reporting to improve patient care outcomes, provider/clinician workflows, and improved operational efficiency and resource stewardship.

The Position may contribute to FCM ZSFG and SFHN leadership meetings and committees, including clinical operations, health equity, and health access. Using a team-based and collaborative approach, the Position is responsible for implementing project scopes of work, project milestones, workflows, communication plans, and may lead teams towards project completion while holding members accountable. The Position works on multiple QI projects and project teams simultaneously and is expected to participate in all facets of parallel projects from design, development, implementation, monitoring, and reporting.

Responsibilities include designing and implementing QI programs for FCM ZSFG and working with internal and external stakeholders, the Advance Reporting User Group (ARUG), and partner SFGH departments and clinics to create advanced reporting and tools to improve clinical and operational metrics. The Position works with the full spectrum of the primary care team including eligibility workers, patient navigators, MEAs, NP/PAs, BHC/BAs, and MD/DOs on health care access, health equity, health disparity, and QI projects using a team-based model of care delivery.

The Position is expected to provide data and QI knowledge and expertise to multiple project teams and clinical and administrative leadership. The Position will support cross-training opportunities to different teams on data and QI to improve data capacity within FCM ZSFG and advise on projects and project teams, as needed.

This position must be able to carry out multiple tasks and projects simultaneously while maintaining critical attention to detail. It is imperative that this position diplomatically communicate between multiple parties to achieve the desired results and meet deadlines. This role will always be juggling multiple types of projects with varied deadlines; as such, it is important that this position remain calm and professional under pressure.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $78,900 - $167,300 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM) is engaged in research, teaching, training, service and clinical activities located at seven primary UCSF and leased sites in San Francisco (Parnassus; ZSFG - Buildings 80, 90, 20 and the Main Hospital; Mission Center Building; Laurel Heights; Mission Hall/ Mission Bay; Lakeshore; and Lakeside) as well as the OSHER Center, Women's Health, and the UCSF Primary Care Practices at China Basin, Laurel Village, and at various local community, national and international research/service/education training and clinical sites. In addition to the Department's Family Medicine Residency Program located at ZSFG, the DFCM has affiliated residency programs in Fresno, Salinas, Santa Rosa, Kaiser Vallejo, and Contra Costa Health Systems. Authority and accountability for the Department reside with the Department Chair who delegates authority to Vice Chairs, the Executive Council, Directors and Chiefs of Service and their Administrators and the Associate Chair of Finance and Administration. The mission of the DFCM is to educate students and residents in family medicine with an emphasis on meeting the needs of the economically disadvantaged and the medically underserved, advance knowledge in family and community medicine and develop methods of primary care that are effective, efficient, and accessible to all people. The Adult Urgent Care Center (UCC) is a clinical enterprise of DFCM at ZSFG for patients 18 years and older in San Francisco needing same-day urgent medical care for illnesses or injuries that are not life-threatening. The UCC operates daily (7 days a week, 365 days a year). UCC is open 83 hours per week, and is one of the highest volume clinics at ZSFG with about 26,000 annual visits. The core mission of the UCC is to care for uninsured and low-income adult residents of San Francisco whose urgent care needs are best met by the clinic and provide "the greatest good for the greatest number" of these patients. The UCC provides services to adult patients who are self-referred, referred from San Francisco Health Network (SFHN) clinics, and referred from the ZSFG Emergency Department (ED). The UCC is committed to provide access for all San Francisco residents by eliminating financial, linguistic, physical and operational barriers and provide quality services that treat illness, promote and sustain wellness, and prevent the spread of disease, injury and disability. Authority and accountability for the UCC reside with the UCC Leadership Team (Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, Clinic Operations Program Manager, Department of Public Health [DPH] Nurse Manager, and DPH Administrative Charge Nurse) and the ZSFGH Hospital Leadership.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, health care, public health, or other healthcare profession, or a combination of comparable clinical education and / or experience
  • Minimum 1 years of related experience
  • Working knowledge of QI standards, clinical chart review and abstraction, and regulatory requirements
  • Working knowledge of QI models, tools, and techniques, including collection, aggregation, abstraction, analysis, and reporting of data
  • Detail oriented, with demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to complete projects and tasks on a timely basis
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills to assess problems quickly and develop multiple options for effective and timely resolution
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills for collaborating effectively with a range of clinical and technical staff and representatives of external regulatory agencies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to produce reports, presentations and documentation
  • Working knowledge of various administrative and business software packages, and of the specialized applications for quality data management

Preferred Qualifications


  • One year of experience working with underserved and/or community based programs and a proven track record of working well with diverse populations in a collaborative role
  • Experience developing and coordinating quality improvement data collection and reporting
  • Knowledge and facility in data software, technology solutions, EHR (Epic), and other SFDPH / SFHN databases
