Position Function
The University Marketing and Communications Web Developer and Maintenance Specialist will play a critical role in developing, maintaining, and optimizing Ball State University's web properties to ensure a stable, scalable, and high-performing digital experience for students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders. As a member of the Marketing and Communications digital team, this role will provide technical expertise in web development, content management, and digital infrastructure, working closely with the Senior Web Developer and Maintenance Specialist and Information Technology teams to ensure the continued functionality, security, and accessibility of bsu.edu, the University's WordPress sites, MyBallState, and other digital platforms.
In addition to web maintenance and troubleshooting, this position will support strategic web initiatives, including reducing outdated content, optimizing website performance, and enhancing user experience. The University Marketing and Communications Web Developer and Maintenance Specialist will also assist in the evaluation and potential transition of Ball State's website content management system ( CMS), ensuring the University's digital assets align with evolving industry best practices and emerging AI and personalization capabilities.
By integrating modern web development practices, responsive design, and accessibility standards, the Web Developer and Maintenance Specialist will support the University's digital transformation efforts and enhance the long-term sustainability of its web ecosystem.
Minimum Education
Bachelor's degree in computer science, web development, information technology, or a related STEM field from an accredited institution.
Minimum Experience
Minimum one year of professional experience in web development, CMS management, or digital maintenance.
Minimum Other

  • Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/jQuery, PHP, and C#
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS), preferably Sitecore and/or WordPress
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues effectively
  • Familiarity with SQL databases (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL) and web accessibility standards (ADA, WCAG)

Preferred Experience
Two or more years of experience in web development, CMS migration, or maintaining digital infrastructure.
Preferred Other

  • Experience working within a marketing or agency environment
  • Knowledge of the .NET Framework, server-side scripting, and API integrations
  • Understanding of SEO best practices as they relate to web development
  • Familiarity with web personalization, CMS optimization, and emerging digital trends, including AI-driven technologies
  • Experience collaborating cross-functional teams such as IT, marketing, enrollment, and digital strategists

The digital team in the division of Marketing and Communications at Ball State
University is responsible for oversite of bsu.edu and related sites, digital marketing efforts including emails, social media by the University's primary branded accounts, and more. Members of the digital team are afforded the digital tools and platforms that ensure Ball State's marketing efforts remains competitive and effective in an ever-changing digital landscape. Members of the digital team work collaboratively with other members of the Marketing and Communications division as well as with many partners around campus.
