SUMMARY:
We are currently seeking a Medical Assistant to join our GI and Liver Clinic. This part-time role will work on-site.

This is a benefit-eligible role and it is union represented. Opportunities for tuition reimbursement and advancement.

***This position is currently Monday-Friday day hours but may expand to include evenings and weekends as we grow.

Hennepin Healthcare's AFSCME pay range:
- Medical Assistants: $22.39-$28.88
Offers are based on prior experience in the respective roles and/or relevant patient-facing roles (non-administrative).

A sign-on bonus is available for eligible external MA candidates (current employees and former employees returning to HHS within one year are ineligible). The sign-on bonus amount is $1,500 for uncertified Medical Assistants and $3,000 for Medical Assistants certified/registered through the AAMA, AMT, or NHA.

Summary: Under the direction, delegation and supervision of a Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP), Manager/ Clinic Nurse Supervisor, charge nurse and/or their delegates, the Medical Assistant performs a wide variety of medical and clinic support functions. The Medical Assistant assists with indirect and direct patient care and performs specialized medical procedures of a routine nature as determined by established Policies, Procedures and Clinical Protocols.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Exemplifies service orientation and the team concept in all contacts.



  • Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with patient and family, team members, department, and medical center personnel
  • Assists with the prioritization of patient flow
  • Supports organization to promote compliance with regulatory standards, customer service, and other initiatives
  • Attends mandatory department meetings, in-services, and work-related educational programs
  • Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities
  • Ensures patient confidentiality at all times
  • Promotes HHS Mission, Vision, and Values
  • Complies with HHS Interpersonal Code of Conduct, Policies & Procedures, and Protocols
  • Takes responsibility for obtaining required continuing education credits to maintain certification


Performs direct patient care tasks after training and competency validation are complete. Direct patient care tasks include but are not limited to the following:



  • Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population
  • Obtains and documents patient's reason for visit, vital signs including height and weight, patient screening questions, review allergies, and review medications
  • Performs a variety of screening related to patient care including but not limited to vision, hearing, developmental, and pain and records information in to the patient's medical record
  • Sets up and prepares patient for examination and/or procedure along with providing direct assistance to LIP
  • Administers immunizations and medications including Parenteral (IM, SQ, and ID), Oral, Rectal and Nebulized as ordered by provider, and records information into the patient's medical record. Asks for assistance from a nurse or LIP if unfamiliar with medication or procedure
  • Collects, labels and processes specimens (e.g. phlebotomy, urinalysis, swabs) using appropriate technique recording information into the patient's medical record as indicated
  • Assists nurse or LIP with procedures including those requiring sterile and clean technique
  • Uses universal blood and body fluid precautions at all times and personal protective equipment as needed
  • Documents and reports patient observations, care and outcomes of interventions in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Follows appropriate documentation procedure on paper for approved department specific procedures
  • Engages and facilitate with other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs
  • Activates emergency response and/or initiates Basic Life Support when appropriate
  • Provides standardized instruction based on written materials. Refer patients that require further teaching to a nurse or LIP
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Indirect patient care/clinic tasks include but are not limited to the following:



  • Promotes patient welfare and independence by communicating through words and actions and understanding of patients' reactions to the healthcare environment
  • Maintains stock of medications and immunizations as assigned
  • Maintains a clean, functional environment including cleaning and disinfecting of equipment and exam rooms
  • Ensures equipment is operable and follows established procedures to remove equipment out of service for inspection
  • Completes the pre-cleaning of scopes and instruments as applicable to department
  • Performs and records calibration/monitoring requirements as assigned
  • Stocks rooms according to written standard work. Procures equipment and supplies as indicated for the department
  • Performs limited registration and scheduling tasks in clinics and/or contact Connection Center to do phone registration and scheduling
  • Attends department daily huddles, meetings, in-services and appropriate work related education programs
  • Assists team with delegated in-basket and care management duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Diploma or Associate's Degree from an accredited Medical Assistant school (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools) that includes a clinical externship or a formal medical services training program of the United States Armed Forces, as evidenced through educational transcripts


Preferred Qualifications:



  • 1 year of primary care clinic experience preferred
  • Experience with EPIC and/or similar electronic health record
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Software
  • months related experience or HHS externship
  • Possesses active certification by the AAMA or active registration by the AMT at hire
  • Bilingual in English and at least one other language commonly spoken by HHS patients


Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:



  • Ability to perform specialized clinical tasks and procedures in alignment with HHS standards
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to effectively interview patients and collect information required to obtain medical history and to accurately register and/or schedule patients
  • Ability to work cohesively and respectfully with a diverse work force and patient population
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and communicate with multidisciplinary staff
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions; understand and communicate verbal and written information
  • Ability to perform job duties that meet departmental performance expectations as well as HHS standards related to quality, accuracy, productivity, patient and family centered care, customer service, etc


License/Certifications:



  • Credentialed or Registered through AAMA, AMT, or NHCA within thirteen (13) months of employment
  • Must have and maintain valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification or the ability to obtain this within the first three months of employment
  • Ambulatory Care Float Pool: Medical Assistant positions in the float pool require driving to off campus clinics. Must have a valid driver's license and the availability of an insured vehicle or demonstrate ability to travel to offsite clinics during the work shift within a one-hour timeframe
