Essential Job Duties |
Become a vital part of NC State University's
Building Maintenance and Operations team as an
HVAC Technician-a hands-on role where your expertise helps ensure the safety, comfort, and functionality of our campus buildings. This position plays a key role in
supporting critical infrastructure by maintaining, repairing, and operating HVAC systems, steam/hot water boilers, and related equipment. In addition to
HVAC responsibilities, this role involves performing general building maintenance, including electrical and plumbing work, within an assigned service zone.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain, repair, and install plumbing systems and fixtures, including pipe cutting, threading, assembling, and valve installations
- Perform electrical tasks up to 600V, including maintenance of panels, breakers, motors, and lighting systems
- Troubleshoot and service HVAC control systems (temperature, humidity, pneumatic valves, and sensors)
- Diagnose and repair boilers, turbines, pumps, steam lines, pressure-reducing stations, and insulation systems
- Conduct preventive maintenance on refrigeration and A/C units according to manufacturer standards
- Demonstrate leadership by guiding and training others in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and control system tasks

Other Responsibilities |
- Safely work on extension ladders and high lifts and Work in confined spaces
- Participate in a quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time, occurring every ten to fourteen weeks.
- Designated as essential personnel for the University, requiring reporting to work during adverse weather conditions even if the University is operating on an alternate schedule and Assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Knowledgeable in local, state, and national codes related to assigned trades
- Technical training in HVAC systems
- Strong verbal communication skills to interact with supervisors and the public; ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Proficiency in using computers and handheld electronic devices for field operations
- Ability to lift up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience in the operation, troubleshooting and repair of building automation systems and controls
- Multi-trade experience with a focus on HVAC, electrical, steam, plumbing, and controls
- Universal CFC certificate
