Job Summary:

Our EMS Call Takers are dedicated to being the first point of contact for individuals facing emergencies. You're connecting to empathetic professionals who will guide you through emergencies with swiftness, precision, and compassion, providing crucial support when it's needed most.

Key Position Details:

  • 1.0 FTE (40-hours per week)
  • 10-hour, day/evening/night shifts (variable start and end times)
  • Every other weekend rotation
  • Full-Time benefit eligible
  • Union seniority bidding every 6 months

Job Description:

Receives and processes 911 emergency and non-emergency calls and assists in the daily operations of medical transportation. Provides coordination for ALS, BLS and Special Transportation along with other support functions of the communication and transportation division.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Answers and processes emergent, non-emergent, and interfacility transfer calls in the Emergency Services Communication Center using telephone and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) in accordance with department policies, procedures, and protocols.
    • Provides coordination for ALS, BLS and Special Transportation.
    • Communicates with clients to schedule, modify, or remove standing appointments.
    • Determines level of care using medical triage with caller using healthcare terms related to anatomy, diagnosis, procedures, medications, and medical conditions accurately documenting patient information.
    • Provides caller with medical direction in emergencies prior to on scene arrival.
    • Provides ongoing updates to EMS Dispatchers in real-time.
    • Serves as liaison between drivers, clients, Dispatchers, and internal/external organizations.
    • Covers Dispatch responsibilities as necessary maintaining working knowledge of how to dispatch service area.
    • May serve as a resource to colleagues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age with education and/or experience needed to meet required functional competencies as listed on the job description
  • Ability to read and understand geographical maps (knowledge of Twin Cities geography preferred)
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks, manage time and communicate with the public in stressful situations
  • Working knowledge and skill using Microsoft applications

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1+ years of Emergency Medical Services Dispatch, Healthcare (Medical Assistant, Emergency Room Technician) or a call center/customer service environment
  • Working knowledge of dispatch or CAD software

Licenses/Certifications

  • Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) required within 60 days of hire

Pay Range

Pay Range: $29.08 to $40.61 per hour The pay described reflects the base hourly pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
