Overview
Provide daily care for a variety of laboratory animals (primarily rodents) to support the research staff at USU.

Responsibilities
  • Provide feed, water, clean cages, and enrichment to animals in care.
  • Handle and restrain animals without causing injury.
  • Maintain accurate records and inventory
  • Daily animal observation reporting any abnormal findings or health issues to the Research Staff and/or Veterinarian.
  • Monitor environmental parameters.
  • Assist in cage wash. Restock supplies in animal holding rooms. Inform Supervisor of any facility issues.
  • Perform sanitation procedures, sweeping, moping etc.
  • Willing to learn principles and practices of animal research, able and willing to learn and follow all federal regulations pertaining to laboratory animals, learn the principles and practices of laboratory animal science, attend personal hygiene and personal safety training annually, willing to work with biological hazards (BSL 2 and 3), and be willing to operate washing and sterilizing equipment.


Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Relevant course work will be considered

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 years experience working with animals
  • ALAT certified through AALSA

This position requires moderate physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds), walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting. This position requires nearly continuous standing, repetitive hand motions, and reaching overhead. Employees may be exposed to unusual elements including extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
