Job Summary : To provide highest quality health care services in a professional and competent manner, by using current nursing skills for the purpose of assisting with and documenting interventional procedures that are performed in the Radiology Department. The Scope of Practice is extended to include administration and documentation of procedural sedation used in the Radiology Department while under the direction of the approved radiologist. The individual in this position will observe all hospital-wide minimum performance standards.Job Description Essential Responsibilities: 1. Performs nursing duties as an integral part of the radiology team. The radiology nurse will provide a high level of nursing skills to the customers of the radiology department including inpatients and outpatients of all age groups. The radiology nurse must be qualified and prepared to handle all day-to-day and emergent situations. Skills utilized will include, but not be limited to, assessment, communication, teaching, leadership, and management. All services provided by the radiology department will utilize the skills of the radiology nurse. a. Corroborates patient's clinical history with procedure, assuring information is accurate, documented and appropriate for the procedure to be performed. b. Prepares patient for procedures providing instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety. c. Selects and utilizes appropriate forms for the purpose of patient assessment, explaining the procedure in order to witness that the physician has explained the procedure and its alternatives for the purpose of obtaining informed consent, and to create procedural documentation for long term keeping of medical records. d. Selects appropriate instruments for the procedure as specified by the Radiologist. e. Utilizes appropriate nursing skills and sterile technique when assisting during procedures. f. Applies nursing skills and approved documentation when administering and documenting procedural sedation upon direction of the radiologist and in a manner consistent with current hospital approved procedural sedation guidelines. g. Applies appropriate nursing skills keeping patient abilities and comfort in mind. h. Verifies documentation for and assists a licensed physician practitioner with procedures. i. Provides support for physical and psychological needs of patients before, during, and immediately following procedures. j. Understands methods and is capable of performing venipuncture for the purpose of administering procedural sedation and to establish sites for injection of radiopharmaceuticals and iodinated contrast agents. k. Prepares, operates, and cares for instruments used for patient monitoring and recording of patient's vital signs and other pertinent data. l. Responsible for assuring that all doses of medications are accurately administered following verification of the medication order, while under the direction and guidance of the radiologist. Must be aware of doses, actions, side effects, and contraindications of all medications in respect to all age groups. m. Must be able to effectively interact and inform family members or significant others of procedures being performed. n. Initiates basic life support actions when necessary. Will assist as needed during Code Blue and/or other emergent patient related situations within the radiology department. o. Maintains, an Instructor designation for Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Certified Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). 2. Understands interventional diagnostic radiographic procedures in order to: a. Develop radiology specific nursing policies and procedures as they relate to performance of nursing duties within the Radiology Department. b. Corroborate patient's clinical history with procedure, assuring information is accurate, documented and available for the radiologist. c. Prepares patient for procedures; providing instruction to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety for the patient and/or family. d. May assist the technologist in immobilizing patients as required for appropriate examination using techniques consistent with hospital approved guidelines for the use of restraints. e. Assumes responsibility for provision of physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures, and assures that all aspects of care provided are accurate, current, and appropriate to growth and development stages from infancy through geriatrics. Assures that appropriate alterations to care are made according to developmental stage of the patient.. f. Practices acceptable aseptic technique as necessary. g. Prepares identifies and administers sedatives and other medications as prescribed by the radiologist. h. Verifies informed consent for, and assists a licensed practitioner with interventional procedures. i. May anchor indwelling urinary catheters as needed for certain diagnostic radiology examinations upon request by the technical staff and/or radiologist. 3. Provides patient education by describing tests and procedures. 4. Assumes responsibility for assigned area and reports equipment malfunction. This includes appearance and cleanness of area and restocking of area supplies 5. Provides input for supply decisions. 6. Provides practical instruction for students and/or other health care professionals. 7. Participates in the department's quality assessment and improvement plan. May be responsible for specific quality control duties in the specialty area. 8. Is knowledgeable of and practices radiation safety measures always using the appropriate protective devices. 9. Complies with minimum hospital-wide standards as noted on the cover page of job description. 10. Maintains knowledge of sterile supplies and techniques utilized for procedures in the radiology department. Assists with inventory control of those supplies. 11. Use common sense and special medical skills to care for the sick or handicapped with regard to the patient's age and diagnosis. This position may include the requirement to participate in on-call duties in order to provide nursing assistance as the need arises. Hours and days of on-call coverage may vary and will be determined at the discretion of the Director of Radiology. Current payroll policies and other hospital and departmental policies will be observed during the call-in situation. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice Education and Experience Required: 1.Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and is a graduate of an approved School of Nursing. Must have all credentials and educational requirements current and documented. 2.Computer experience. 3.Should be an experienced clinical registered nurse, who once trained, must possess a working knowledge of radiology interventional procedures, MRI procedures, conscious sedation protocols and approved policies. Mandatory Licensure/Certifications: Individuals must meet state licensure and certification requirements defined by law for a registered nurse in the State of Indiana and Hendricks Regional Health.
