Essential Job Duties |
We are seeking a highly skilled
Maintenance Mechanic IV within our Building Maintenance & Operations department to join our team. This role is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and operating heating, cooling, and steam/hot water boiler systems, as well as performing electrical,
HVAC, and plumbing maintenance across our service zone.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in troubleshooting and repairing complex mechanical systems while ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain, repair, and install HVAC systems, boilers, pumps, steam lines, expansion joints, and associated piping
- Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical systems up to 600V, including panels, breakers, motors, light fixtures, and control circuits
Perform plumbing repairs and installations, including pipe fitting, water softeners, and fixture replacements Conduct preventive maintenance on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment per manufacturer guidelines- Analyze and resolve faults and defects in HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems, ensuring efficient operation
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures, arc flash safety, and regulatory standards
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and vendors to coordinate repairs and share technical knowledge
- Plan and implement team assignments while mentoring lower-level mechanics
- Respond to safety concerns and hazardous situations to maintain a secure work environment

Other Responsibilities |
- Must participate in quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time. This occurs every ten to fourteen weeks
- This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with supervisors and the general public. This includes understanding and conveying verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing mechanical systems
- Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations

Preferred Qualifications |
- Proven experience in electrical, HVAC systems, controls, plumbing, or a combination of these trades
- Demonstrated expertise in troubleshooting, repairing, and installing systems across multiple trades, showcasing a strong depth of knowledge and skills as a multi-trade mechanic

- Valid driver's license required
- Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
