Job Summary:



The Department of Pediatrics (DOP) and the Precision Medicine Institute (PMI) seek an accomplished and experienced professional to serve as Director of Genetic Counselor (GC) Practice Development. The Director will provide department-wide leadership in the development and implementation of clinical practice strategies designed to improve faculty well-being, practice efficiency, scope of practice standardization, faculty productivity expectations, and system-level engagement with hospital leadership. In addition, the Director will support the development and implementation of initiatives designed to support the career pathway development to effectively recruit and retain GC talent within the

Department.

There are two distinct roles related to GCs in the Department: 1) to support the clinical activities of all GCs in the department (both those based in the Section of Genetics and Metabolism and those working primarily in other sections); and 2) work with PMI leadership to support strategic initiatives impacting the GC workforce. This role will address the unique needs of various GC care models and roles. This position has a matrixed/collaborative working relationship with department GC faculty, Vice Chair of Wellbeing, other Section leaders, DOP clinical operations team, the Precision Medicine Institute (PMI), and Children's Colorado Hospital (CHCO) leadership.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Impacts the successful implementation of practice optimization efforts and top-of-scope duties/workflows, including but not limited to influencing key stakeholders to ensure buy-in and engagement, removing significant project barriers and leading communication strategy impacting GC faculty.
  • Acts as the day-to-day contact for the Section of Genetics operations team, as well as operations teams from other sections providing GC services on project action plans and helps define and implement project recommendations resulting in downstream impact and involvement of GCs.
  • Collaborates with operational managers to implement and evaluate new programs in conjunction with Department and Section clinical leadership and Precision Medicine leadership.
  • Collaborates with GC faculty, Clinic Medical Directors, Precision Medicine leadership, and Hospital clinical leaders to determine staffing standards, ensure the appropriate number of GC staff, support appropriate top of scope practice, assessing scheduling practices based on service requirements, and establishing productivity metrics across GC care models.
  • In conjunction with the Section Head of Genetics & Metabolism support the professional development of GCs within the department.
  • Develops mentoring activities and supports clinical, academic, and educational missions for our GC workforce as a whole.
  • Coordinates with Section of Genetics, DOP, to evaluate, inform, and implement novel care pathways to improve access to genetic testing across the CHCO system of care.
  • Participates in CHCO, CU Medicine, and School of Medicine leadership committees as appropriate, as assigned by Department leadership.
  • Provides mentorship and assists GCs across DOP to accomplish inpatient and outpatient patient care mission and goals.
  • Collaborates with Section Head and Vice Chair of Academic Affairs to advance Genetic Counselors' pursuit of academic advancement and educational opportunities.
  • Will work with Section and Department leadership to evaluate and respond to Staff satisfaction surveys.
  • Collaborate with DOP and Section(s) leadership to communicate Section, DOP, Precision Medicine, and Hospital concerns and priorities to GC providers, and serve as a major conduit for bringing concerns and ideas from GC providers to Section, DOP, Precision Medicine, and Hospital Leadership structures.
  • Works with the Section Head of Genetics and the Clinical Director of Precision Medicine, but also has responsibility to report to and work with other DOP leadership, particularly the Operations Team, Academic Affairs and Wellness, and the Vice Chairs for those roles, as well as Section Heads and operations teams for sections utilizing deployed/integrated GCs.
  • Will work with PMI and the Precision Diagnostic laboratory to inform, coordinate, and communicate new offerings to GC and relevant clinical teams.
  • Partner with and assist Section Business Manager and CU-Medicine Rev Cycle liaison to maximize revenue opportunities, standardize charting processes, and educate around best practices for GC billing.
  • This leader will maintain a clinical role within the Department of Pediatrics.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Senior Instructor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Senior Instructor



  • MS Genetic Counseling degree from an accredited University program required
  • Board certification by ABGC
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a GC required
  • Current clinical activity practicing as a certified GC


Assistant Professor



  • Medical Degree

    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the doctorate degree


  • Board certification by ABGC
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a GC required, interest in pursuing academic promotion
  • Current clinical activity practicing as a certified GC


Associate Professor



  • Medical Degree

    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the doctorate degree


  • Board certification by ABGC
  • Minimum of seven (10) years of experience as a GC required, interest in pursuing academic promotion
  • Current clinical activity practicing as a certified GC


Condition of Employment:



  • Must successfully pass a drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado
  • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Minimum three (3) years of broad and extensive experience managing and leading clinical programs, work units or departments of sufficient scope and complexity required.
  • Process/Performance/Quality improvement experience and/or training (e.g., Lean certification, IHQSE) preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience providing leadership and promoting change in a positive manner that supports all employees of the department and health system.

  • Demonstrated experience independently seeking out resources and solving complex problems under stressful and/or crisis situations.

  • Experience with pediatric patients
  • Capable of managing multiple patients at a time
  • Good communication skills.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Senior Instructor - range for 5 YOE to 20+ YOE

$86,000 to $116,000

Assistant Professor - range for 7 YOE to 20+ YOE

$90,000 to $116,000

Associate Professor - range for 10 YOE to 20+ YOE

$96,000 to $116,000

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
