Job Description:

  • Candidates will operate equipment ranging from standard vehicles and multiple axle trucks and trailers to varied types of heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, tractors, dump trucks, water trucks, tanker trucks, and cranes used in the construction, improvement and repair aspects of Metropolitan's large-scale water treatment, distribution, and hydroelectric systems. Candidate skills include the proper and safe use, transportation, and minor maintenance of varied equipment, as well as advanced knowledge of construction techniques associated with heavy equipment used in conjunction with a variety of water, hydroelectric and supporting infrastructure improvement such as maintenance and corrective repair projects. Assist in general patrol road maintenance activities including operating dump trucks, water trucks, and vacuum trucks. Assist with loading of materials, general labor activities, and vehicle maintenance.
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience as an equipment operator is required. Must operate Heavy Equip (Dump Truck/Water Truck) with constant attention to safety of equipment operation in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of water utility assets, assemblies, and water related equipment such as large gates, valves, pipelines, structures vaults, drain covers, and similar equipment.



Desires Experience Below:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience as an equipment operator.
  • May be required to obtain a valid Driver's license from state of residency equivalent to a California Class A or B with appropriate commercial license endorsements.
  • OSHA.
  • No Cal PERS membership.
  • No ACTIVE Carpenter Union membership.


Role & Responsibilities:

  • Performs general and advanced equipment operation as well as related tasks to accomplish Preventive Maintenance (PMs), Corrective Maintenance (CMs), and improvements related to the rebuilding, repair and maintenance of water conveyance systems, treatment and hydroelectric plants to support operational reliability and system capacity.
  • Performs roadway maintenance such as preparation work, mixing, laying and placing asphalt and concrete. Maintaining and repairing patrol, powerline, and other right-of-ways to ensure access to pipelines, aqueducts, powerlines and communication sites.
  • Performs and/or assists with major improvements, shutdowns, or other CM and PM activities on a variety of construction related projects that ensure asset/equipment life, water and hydroelectric uptime and reliability.
  • Performs erosion control of drain ways through construction, maintenance and repair of V-dykes, culverts, and bridges to maintain right-of-ways for effective access.
  • Recognizes and avoids harming endangered species, and other protected vegetation, as well as weed abatement in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations.
  • Operates light and heavy motorized equipment with constant attention to safety in order to prevent accidents and injuries at worksites.
  • Assists with injection of sodium hypochloride, sodium bisulfate and copper sulfate into aqueducts and reservoirs to control algae.
  • Performs general preventive and corrective maintenance on light and heavy equipment in both shop and field environments to maintain equipment in proper and safe working order.
  • Effectively operates varied power driven equipment such as jackhammers, tampers, or other similarly sized equipment.
  • In accordance with district required training safely and effectively transports hazardous materials including transformer and asphalt oil, diesel fuel, gasoline, treatment process byproducts, batteries, tires and propane.


Certificate & Licenses:

Employees in this position may be required to obtain and maintain the following certifications, licensing and registrations:

  • Valid Driver's license from state of residency equivalent to a California Class A with appropriate commercial license endorsements.
  • Crane certification.
  • Forklift Certification.
  • Hazardous Materials Certification.
  • Manlift Certification.
  • Respirator Certification.
