Department Summary

UNT's Office of Advising Services is a centralized advising team committed to serving students and the advising community. From pre-admission through graduation, we eliminate barriers to academic success and increase retention through accessible services including major exploration counseling, prospective advising, and the class concierge service.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for providing guidance to students by appraising their interests, aptitudes, and abilities to develop a career path and degree fit. This position also connects students with resources for academic success and personal/professional development. This position is responsible for providing guidance to prospective students by appraising incoming credit and helping to identify their best degree fit. Finally, this position assists in implementing programs related to student success and retention.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree and two years' of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate). Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory. Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work independently. Remains active in professional development.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in an advising office counseling students who present with uncertainty of major, advising transfer students, and/or working with at risk populations. Demonstrates strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Demonstrates strong communication skills, verbal and written. Experience working with multiple departments and/or committee work.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Job Duties:



  • Counsels students regarding information about their interests, aptitudes, abilities, and other personal characteristics.
  • Consults on difficult issues or expectations related to assisting students.
  • Assists with the development retention and completion initiatives.
  • Implements programs related to student success and retention.
  • Provides training, and direction to Academic Advisors or other staff as assigned.
  • Counsels students regarding university requirements and individual program requirements including applicability of transfer credits in a timely and professional manner.
  • Counsels students regarding Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements and TSI class placement.
  • Presents academic information at new student orientations, exploring majors workshops, and on campus events.
  • Occasional advising and presentations at UNT Frisco.

8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Occasional evening or Saturday events
