Department Summary

The College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism offers five bachelor of science degree programs (hospitality management, merchandising, home furnishings merchandising, digital retailing, and consumer experience management) and three master of science degree programs (merchandising, hospitality management, and international sustainable tourism). The mission of the College is to transform learning, research and engagement for a global experience economy. Industry-relevant coursework delivered by expert faculty employs a focus on creative thinking and globally oriented problem solving.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for providing guidance to students by appraising their interests, aptitudes, and abilities to develop a career path and degree fit. Connects students with available resources for academic success and personal/professional development. This position is responsible for creating and implementing programs related to student success and retention.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree and four years' of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
  • Strong leadership skills appropriate for a supportive, dynamic environment.
  • Strong presentation skills, critical thinking skills, creative problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.


Job Duties:



  • Counsels students regarding information about their interests, aptitudes, abilities, and other personal characteristics.
  • Consults on difficult issues or expectations related to assisting students.
  • Develops retention and completion initiatives.
  • Creates and implements programs related to student success and retention.
  • Provides training, and direction to Academic Advisors or other staff as assigned.
  • Counsels students regarding University requirements and individual program requirements including applicability of transfer credits in a timely and professional manner.
