Department Summary

Counseling & Testing Services consists of two inter-related parts: The Counseling Center and Testing Services. We exist to serve the students and community of UNT in support of the mission of the University. Through our Counseling Center services, we strive to support the academic success and general well-being of UNT students through professional counseling, career counseling, consultation, mental-health screenings, educational programs and self-help resources as well as referral services. We offer to consult with Students, Parents, Faculty and Staff who may be concerned about a UNT student (while still respecting the confidentiality of our clients). With client permission, we often work closely with physicians and psychiatrists, the Career Center, Office of Disability Access, and many other helpful resources in order to provide the best overall care. Our Testing Services provides a wide range of services including traditional admissions testing, computer-based testing, career testing, and many other tests.

Position Overview

Provides outreach, individual, group, and crisis counseling to students who reside in the residence halls. Actively participates in administrative supervision. Receives or provides clinical supervision as indicated by licensure status.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's in mental health field (counseling, social work, psychology). Must be licensed in TX as LPC, LPC ' Associate, LMFT, LMFT-Associate, LMSW, or equivalent. If licensed in another state, must obtain full TX licensure within 24 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of professional counseling practices, policies, and procedures. Strong oral and written communications skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
Short term treatment orientation
Experience working in a College Counseling Setting
Experience using Titanium software
Bilingual Full unrestricted license by the State of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or equivalent.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Licensed by the State of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Masters Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist or equivalent. If licensed at the Associate level, must obtain full licensure within 24 months of employment.

Job Duties:




  • Initial Consultations & Individual Counseling

    Conduct initial consultations for first year residence students in accordance with the Service Delivery Agreement, ensuring client concerns, goals, and potential risks are clearly documented. Establish follow-up plans, utilize CCAPS data in decision-making, and complete documentation by the end of the next business day. Complete Success Plans and determine appropriate levels of care, making referrals as needed.

    Provide individual counseling to first year residence students in accordance with the Service Delivery Agreement, while documenting clinical interventions, risk assessments, and updates to Student Success Plans. Sessions incorporate evidence-based interventions, with CCAPS reviewed regularly to guide treatment.

    Group Counseling

    Conduct Group Counseling/Workshops as assigned. Market and evaluate the effectiveness/satisfaction of services.

    Crisis Counseling

    Provides crisis/urgent counseling as assigned, including additional support/coverage as necessary. Ensure timely completion of crisis documentation and safety plans. Facilitate completion of appropriate Releases of Information. Consult with your supervisor as needed and keep administrators and front desk informed of hospitalizations. Coordinate follow-ups and transportation when needed and secure coverage during planned absences.

    Coordinator/Liaison Duties

    Serve as a liaison for Housing/Residence Life by developing and delivering training for housing staff and providing consultation and support to RAs. Meet with housing contacts at least twice per semester to assess needs and offer guidance. Additionally, provide ongoing outreach support for Housing/Residence Life monthly.

    Professional Development/Ethics/Legal Standards

    Maintain CEU requirements and licensure as mandated by the state board or continue to work towards completion of full licensure within 2 years of start of employment. Stay actively involved in professional organizations through membership, presentations, or publications. Uphold ethical and legal standards and seek consultation when facing ethical dilemmas.

    Supervision

    Provide supervision and training as assigned, offering informal consultation and guidance when needed. Actively participate in training activities, document supervision activities, and engage in personal supervision with openness to feedback.

    Case Management

    Make appropriate referrals while remaining informed about available on-campus and off-campus resources. Complete case management referral notes as indicated.

    Outreach

    Participate in outreach services as assigned, market services, and evaluate program effectiveness to enhance student support.

    Teamwork & Collaboration

    Engage in after-hours or weekend assignments as needed and participate in special projects. Offer support to colleagues, particularly in crisis situations, and foster strong internal and external professional relationships.

Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm. Flexible schedules may be approved.
